Is Sentry the MCU’s Superman? The Ultimate Power Showdown!

Marvel Studios has brought Sentry, frequently referred to as the MCU’s equivalent of Superman, to life on screen for the first time. However, whether Sentry possesses the same level of power as Superman is a topic up for debate. Fortunately, there is an abundance of film footage available to help us reach a conclusion about this.

Robert Reynolds first appeared in Thunderbolts as a struggling member of Project Sentry. He managed to endure the trial that claimed others’ lives, earning him an overwhelming power within his Sentry persona. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Sentry made a powerful entrance in Thunderbolts, swiftly overpowering the team when ordered to subdue them.

The upcoming movie featuring Superman will be released on July 11th. Unlike Sentry, Superman is quite familiar with the big screen. Over the years, this character has had a more extensive comics career and has consistently shown an impressive range of abilities.

Despite appearing simple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sentry shows he’s far from a jest. His casual use of power against the Thunderbolts hints at a hidden strength that could easily stand up for itself.

Or, in an even simpler version:

Sentry might look like a beginner in the MCU, but his quick and powerful moves against the Thunderbolts indicate he’s more capable than people think.

Sentry’s Powers Explained

Sentry Is As Powerful As One Thousand Exploding Suns

In the comic book series Thunderbolts, Sentry is depicted as having the might of a thousand detonating suns. This comparison possibly hints at his extraordinary physical strength, even though Sentry possesses numerous other superpowers. During his battle with the Thunderbolts, these powers manifested, such as:

1. Super Strength
2. Flight
3. Energy Blasts
4. Invulnerability
5. Regenerative abilities
6. Telekinesis
7. Matter manipulation
8. Time travel (implied but not explicitly shown)

  • Invulnerability
  • Super Speed
  • Super Strength
  • Telekinesis
  • Flight
  • Heat Vision
  • Quantum Phasing Manipulation

It’s uncertain if Sentry, in the movie, will have all the extraordinary powers his comic book version possesses, like control over matter at a molecular level and immortality. If he does, it might be challenging to comprehend the significant changes the power dynamics could bring about within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Regarding that point, Sentry has been scarcely observed so far, with the only proof being his extremely brief fight against the Thunderbolts. As for the Void, its ability to transport victims to another dimension appears to be indomitable, but leaving the realm seems to depend solely on Bob’s mental strength overcoming it.

In the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Sentry’s primary vulnerability lies in the Void – his dark counterpart who thrives on creating chaos, contrasting with the Sentry’s usual heroic actions. While this duality mirrors his comic book persona, the MCU’s Sentry has claimed divinity, hinting that he may possess characteristics that are less than heroic in nature.

Superman’s Powers Explained

Superman Has Several Powers But One Key Weakness

Superman’s extensive history showcases a wide range of abilities he can draw upon. Over the years, this steel-clad hero has significantly expanded his repertoire, now possessing an impressively versatile skill set. Superman’s powers are numerous and varied, but some of the most notable include:

  • Invulnerability
  • Super Speed
  • Super Strength
  • Flight
  • Heat Vision
  • Reversing Time

In various movie appearances, Superman has shown some less commonly known (and occasionally debatable) abilities, such as a kiss that erases memories and the power to reconstruct the Great Wall of China using only his eyesight. It’s unclear whether contemporary versions of Superman still possess these unusual powers.

In trailers and teasers for James Gunn’s new version of Superman, we see him utilizing Earth’s yellow sun to heal and regain strength when he’s been hurt. Conversely, a red sun saps Superman of his abilities instead.

A more well-known vulnerability of Superman is kryptonite. Although he’s nearly invincible, the presence of this substance gives less formidable characters like Batman and Lex Luthor an advantage over the almost deity-like Superman. Keeping that in mind, it becomes simpler to assess who among them is the most powerful.

Sentry Is More Powerful

Sentry Doesn’t Have As Exploitable A Weakness

Despite Sentry and Superman possessing remarkably similar superpowers, Superman’s vulnerabilities can be exploited more readily. Engaging in a head-to-head battle of strength could result in a close outcome, however, when the Sentry is overtaken by the Void, he does not lose his abilities, but rather becomes even more formidable.

Instead of having all his powers, Superman may seem vulnerable or weak in the upcoming “Superman” movie. This could be due to an encounter with kryptonite, which is known for its ability to strip a Kryptonian like Superman of their superhuman abilities such as invulnerability.

In the movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” Superman was fatally wounded by a spear made of Kryptonite. Contrastingly, when the Sentry’s kill-switch was activated in some version of his story, he didn’t perish but instead merged with the Void, hinting at his immortality, much like his comic book character. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Sentry possesses abilities such as molecular manipulation, it would give him an additional advantage.

In my perspective, although Superman’s vulnerabilities serve to humanize the character, they can be manipulated all too readily. On the other hand, it’s the weakness of Sentry that puts others at risk instead.

How Powerful Sentry Is Compared To Other Marvel & DC Characters

Only The Most Powerful Characters Stand A Chance Against Sentry

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), only a select few would dare challenge the Sentry, as his powers are nearly divine and almost impossible to overcome. However, there could be exceptions who manage to give him a run for his money.

To give an example, the Scarlet Witch boasts immense reality-altering abilities. Her swift defeat of Earth-838’s Illuminati indicates she could stand her ground against even stronger beings, and perhaps even match Sentry’s power. Doctor Strange, on the other hand, is another potent magic user who has outsmarted the ruler of the Dark Dimension.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, let me tell you that Jean Grey, especially when fueled by the Phoenix Force, can be downright unsettling compared to characters like Sentry. With her telepathic powers added into the mix, she’s a force to be reckoned with. On another level altogether, cosmic beings such as Death and Mephisto seem to hold dominion over the very essence of existence itself.

In DC Comics, Spectre possesses almost limitless powers because it embodies their representation of a divine entity. On the other hand, Superman Prime One Million is an adaptation of Superman who, over a span of 15,000 years, amassed near-limitless power by absorbing energy from the yellow sun. However, he remains vulnerable to kryptonite.

To put it simply, Sentry is truly exceptional, even resembling divine beings when wielding matter manipulation abilities as depicted in Marvel Comics. However, since we haven’t witnessed the full might of this powerful character on screen yet, it remains uncertain whether DCU’s Superman could match up to him.
