The classic “chicken or the egg” question is becoming central to the final season of Stranger Things. While some things are clear – like Ted Wheeler being a bit of a dreamer, Steve Harrington’s lingering feelings for Nancy, and Joyce Byers’ protective parenting – the Duffer brothers are keeping most details secret, even as the series nears its end. But one mystery stands above the rest: figuring out who the real villain is, so viewers know who to oppose in the final showdown between good and evil.
During the second season, a massive creature made of smoke emerges from the alternate dimension, known as the Upside Down, and the kids nickname it “the Mind Flayer.” This creature begins to control the actions of people in Hawkins, ultimately leading to the death of Max’s brother, Billy. However, the Mind Flayer becomes less of a threat when a new villain, Vecna – revealed to be Eleven’s former acquaintance, Henry Creel – appears. While the creators, the Duffer brothers, hint that Vecna might be the main antagonist of the entire series, they haven’t confirmed it, leaving the story open as it nears its conclusion.
When asked by Variety whether Vecna or the Mind Flayer is the true villain of Stranger Things, Matt Duffer explained that the answer will be revealed in the show’s final episode. He added that he’s happy to discuss everything once the series concludes, but hinted that fans may already have a good idea of the truth.

I just saw Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the play that came before the final season of Stranger Things, and it was incredible! It tells the story of young Henry Creel growing up in Hawkins, and it really explains how he became the villain we know. It turns out he wasn’t born evil – he was a normal kid who found some strange tech that opened a door to another dimension. That’s where this dark, powerful being started influencing him, and honestly, it feels like we finally understand where the Mind Flayer came from. It’s a really clever way to tie everything together and give us a complete backstory before the show ends!
Some people will undoubtedly argue that an obscure play can’t really influence a popular TV show. However, the show’s fifth season is already highlighting the play’s significance by featuring its location in an early episode. While the creators likely have other surprises in store, the main villain might actually be who we already suspect.
