Netflix started as a DVD-by-mail service, but it’s transformed into a leading streaming platform with a wide variety of original content. From early successes like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards to newer hits like Bridgerton, many of its shows have enjoyed long and successful runs. In fact, Orange is the New Black and Grace and Frankie, both lasting seven seasons, only recently lost their positions as Netflix’s longest-running shows.
Originally debuting in December 2019, Virgin River has become Netflix’s longest-running series after being renewed for an eighth season. The show follows Melinda “Mel” Monroe, a nurse practitioner who relocates from the city to a small town to start fresh after experiencing personal hardships. While Mel is the central character, the show features a growing cast of supporting characters. It has a similar heartwarming feel to shows like Gilmore Girls, but also includes plenty of dramatic twists and turns. Now that season seven has finished, however, it’s time to acknowledge a tough reality about the series.
Virgin River Feels Like It’s Going In Circles

It’s clear Virgin River is a hit, now being Netflix’s longest-running series. However, the latest season showed a potential problem: the storylines are starting to repeat themselves. While important things are happening – like Mel and Jack’s wedding in season six and their attempt to adopt a baby in season seven – the plot felt somewhat cyclical, leaving viewers unsure about the adoption’s success until the very end.
However, the show’s storylines are starting to feel predictable. Brie and Brady’s relationship, for example, is stuck in a familiar pattern of breaking up and getting back together, even though they believe things are different this time. Similarly, Doc and Hope, despite being married, ended the last season with problems, and Hope found herself turning to her ex-husband, Roland, – a situation we’ve seen before. These repeating patterns are becoming a common issue.
Honestly, even Mel and Jack’s journey to becoming parents in season 7 felt a little predictable. Their son arriving in the last episode was a big moment for the show overall, but then finding out he had a serious heart condition… it just felt like another child Mel had to worry about losing, and after everything she’s been through, it was a bit much. It’s a storyline we’ve seen played out before, and it didn’t quite land for me.
While Virgin River is usually uplifting, the show has made Mel’s experience as a new mother unnecessarily difficult. While this could be realistic for some, it now feels like the show is simply putting Mel through hardship without actually developing her storyline. It’s frustrating – she just wants to be a mom!
Season 6 Left On A Massive Cliffhanger…That Turned Out To Be A Red Herring

Season 7 proved frustrating because it quickly revealed the cliffhanger from season 6 was a misdirection. The season 6 finale strongly suggested Charmaine’s ex, Calvin, had killed her, but season 7 flipped that, revealing Calvin was actually the one who died. While the show followed this with a dramatic kidnapping storyline involving Charmaine, it still felt like the season 6 finale was designed to mislead viewers.
The show doesn’t need violence to stay engaging, even though the last season hinted at it. Virgin River can remain a successful drama on Netflix without resorting to murder, but it does need to find fresh and creative ways to develop its main characters. With season 8 confirmed, hopefully the writers will focus on making that happen.
Season 8 Is Confirmed, And It Has Some Work To Do

Okay, so heading into Season 8, there are a few things everyone’s thinking about, but the biggest is definitely what happens with Jack and Mel’s new baby. Honestly, I’m pretty sure the baby’s going to be okay. It would just feel so unfair to put Mel through another heartbreak after everything she’s been through. More than anything, I’m really hoping we finally get to see Mel as a mom – we’ve been waiting for this for years, and it would be amazing to see that side of her.
Beyond Mel and Jack, other important relationships like Brie and Brady’s, and Doc and Hope’s marriage, need to develop further. If Brie and Brady are serious about moving past their complicated history, the next season should show that progress. Doc and Hope’s marriage needs more stability too, but hopefully they won’t consider divorce after everything they’ve been through. There are many possibilities for Virgin River season 8, but it’s important that the new season feels fresh and moves the storylines forward.
