Microsoft is starting a new program called “Windows AI Labs” that lets Windows 11 users test out early versions of AI-powered features in apps like Paint. It’s a way for users to get a sneak peek and provide feedback on experimental AI tools.
The program isn’t quite ready for sign-ups – we’re currently getting an error when we try. It looks like the intention is to collect user feedback on new AI features Microsoft is developing, before they’re released to everyone.
The program’s terms explain that it’s a way for Microsoft and a select group of people to test early, unfinished versions of Microsoft Paint. Your feedback will be used to improve the features before they’re released to everyone.

Microsoft has been letting Windows Insiders try out new AI features in Windows 11 for some time. Now, they’re thinking about creating a separate preview program just for AI. This new program, called Windows AI Labs, would require a separate sign-up, even if you’re already a Windows Insider.
The Windows AI Labs page is rolling out gradually, so not everyone has access yet. Microsoft hasn’t revealed exactly what AI features they’ll be testing through the program, or if a Copilot+ PC will be needed to use them. Some of these AI features might require a special chip (called an NPU) built into your computer.
Microsoft recently released updates for two classic Windows apps: Paint and Notepad. The new version of Paint now lets you save your work as a project file with layers, much like Photoshop, so you can continue editing later. The updated Notepad includes AI-powered tools that work directly on your computer.
Right now, Windows AI Labs is only available in the Paint app, but it’s likely we’ll see it added to other built-in Windows apps like Notepad. Notepad has also gotten a lot of AI-powered features recently, so it makes sense that AI Labs could be next.
