HBO plans to revive the Harry Potter series as a television show, aiming for a 2027 debut with a brand new cast. This adaptation will allow for a more faithful retelling of J.K. Rowling’s books, with each book potentially getting its own season. While the longer books, like Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, might require multiple seasons, the series could ultimately run for seven to ten seasons.
So, the buzz about the potential Harry Potter series on HBO is getting even more interesting! I just learned that Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t stopping there – they’re already brainstorming spinoff ideas. With the possible merger with Paramount looming, it sounds like we could see even more magical content heading our way sooner than we think. It’s exciting news for any Potterhead, and I’m definitely keeping an eye on this development!
Warner Bros. Exec Teases Harry Potter Spinoffs

JB Perrette, who leads streaming and gaming at Warner Bros. Discovery, recently discussed the future of the Harry Potter franchise with Variety. According to the report, HBO plans to create Harry Potter-themed series for the next decade, beginning in 2027. Perrette stated that they have a clear plan for strong, compelling content, which is central to their strategy.
The way Warner Bros. refers to this as a “Harry Potter-branded series” is significant. It suggests they’re moving beyond simply adapting the books and are aiming to expand the Wizarding World in new directions. Many experts believe this show is an attempt to create a connected universe, similar to Marvel or DC, something the Fantastic Beasts films couldn’t achieve in theaters. With the success of Game of Thrones spinoffs like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – which are attracting impressive viewership – HBO now has a proven model for doing the same with Harry Potter.
Fans are eager for new stories set in the wizarding world. Many have expressed interest in a prequel series focusing on Harry’s parents, James and Lily, during their time at Hogwarts, or a sequel that picks up years later, following Harry as he sends his own child to school. With Harry Potter already a massive success in books, movies, games, live events, and merchandise, expanding into more TV series feels like the natural next step.
HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series features Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione. The supporting cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Season 1, which is based on The Sorcerer’s Stone, will also star Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and Tristan and Gabriel Harland as Fred and George Weasley, among others. Hans Zimmer, known for his work on The Dark Knight trilogy, is composing the music for the series.
HBO’s Harry Potter TV series will premiere (and stream on HBO Max) in 2027.
