The new series, IT: Welcome to Derry, deeply investigates the dark history of the town and how Pennywise’s evil affects a new group of victims in 1962. It shows us firsthand how this terrifying, otherworldly force creates cycles of fear and turns ordinary lives into nightmares. This isn’t a single story; the creators, Andy and Barbara Muschietti, have planned a three-season arc. Each season will go further back in time, revealing earlier periods of violence. The show has already hinted at these future storylines with references to past events, and the latest episode strongly suggests that the horror will become even more intense as the story moves further into the past.
Warning: Spoilers below for IT: Welcome to Derry, Episode 5
The latest episode of IT: Welcome to Derry confirms that the area’s original inhabitants have always known Pennywise’s secrets, going back to when their ancestors first contained the creature within Derry. A meeting led by Rose (Kimberly Guerrero) offers a clear hint about the show’s direction. Rose notes that the current events in 1962 are less intense than what happened in 1935 and 1908, suggesting that future seasons will explore those earlier, more terrifying periods and show a much more powerful and widespread version of Pennywise’s evil.
Stephen King’s IT Book Teases the Horrors to Come in Welcome to Derry

The new IT: Welcome to Derry series is heavily inspired by Stephen King’s original 1986 novel. The book includes historical chapters detailing the town of Derry’s dark past, researched by the character Mike Hanlon, which reveal previous attacks by the evil entity Pennywise. The series will focus on two of the most horrifying events from that history – the brutal killings by the Bradley Gang and the devastating explosion at the Kitchener Ironworks – as major storylines in upcoming seasons.
The show’s second season, taking place in 1935, will probably depict the violent downfall of the Bradley Gang, a group of infamous bank robbers who foolishly sought refuge in Derry. According to the novel, after a series of crimes, the town’s residents decided to handle the situation themselves. Driven by Pennywise’s evil presence, they ambushed and killed the outlaws in the streets. Witnesses in the book reported seeing a clown among the mob, laughing during the brutal attack.
I’m really excited for the third season because it’s going back to 1908 to show us the Kitchener Ironworks disaster. It’s a truly awful event in Derry’s past – a sudden, unexplained explosion happened right in the middle of an Easter egg hunt. The blast killed 102 people, and unbelievably, 88 of them were children. It’s considered one of Pennywise’s most horrific attacks. They actually hinted at the Kitchener Ironworks in the first IT movie, and that disturbing image of a burning Easter Bunny? That was right at the start of Welcome to Derry, so it’s clearly a significant event they’re going to explore.

Even though the show promises even scarier seasons ahead, the current storyline remains deeply unsettling. The fifth episode of Welcome to Derry finally revealed Pennywise (played by Bill Skarsgård) in his full, terrifying clown form, hinting at a dangerous future for the children of 1962. Meanwhile, Dick Halloran’s story is heading toward a heartbreaking end as he helps create the Black Spot club in an abandoned airplane hangar – a place fans of the book know will tragically burn down, another terrible event caused by Pennywise.
New episodes of IT: Welcome to Derry premiere on HBO every Sunday.
