IT: Welcome to Derry on Track to Set HBO Record (Does It Mean Season 2 Is Happening?)

Andy and Barbara Muschietti, the filmmakers behind the popular IT movies, revisited the world of Stephen King with a new series called IT: Welcome to Derry. The show takes viewers back to 1962, revealing the frightening history of Derry, Maine, and the events that happen every 27 years before the 2017 film. By exploring the town’s dark past and how Pennywise the Dancing Clown came to be, the series quickly became a hit, drawing record numbers of viewers when it premiered. IT: Welcome to Derry has continued to be a popular and widely discussed horror series on HBO.

The new series IT: Welcome to Derry is proving to be a big success. Warner Bros. Discovery reports that the third episode attracted 5 million U.S. viewers in its first three days, combining viewers from both HBO and HBO Max. While slightly down from the first episode, this is still a very strong performance for a new show. Across the entire season, episodes are averaging 9.2 million U.S. viewers and almost 15 million worldwide. The show’s premiere was the third-most-watched in HBO history, behind only House of the Dragon and The Last of Us. Although HBO hasn’t officially announced a second season yet, the consistently high viewership suggests one is very likely.

IT: Welcome to Derry Has Seasons 2 and 3 Mapped Out

Andy and Barbara Muschietti, the creators of the IT series, have shared their plans for the show’s future. They envision a three-season story that will explore Derry’s dark history by going further back in time with each installment. Each season will focus on a different 27-year period of Pennywise’s evil deeds, tied to a major, tragic event from Derry’s past as described in Stephen King’s novel. The current season, set in 1962, is leading up to the infamous ‘Black Spot’ incident. This event, in the book, involves a nightclub for Black soldiers that is destroyed in a racist attack – a horrific act of violence that Pennywise uses to amplify the town’s fear.

The show is already hinting at storylines for future seasons. The opening sequence of the second episode specifically foreshadows major events that will likely be featured in seasons two and three. One animated segment shows a depiction of the 1935 Bradley Gang massacre, where bank robbers were killed by townspeople. Another visual clearly references the 1908 Kitchener Ironworks explosion, a tragic disaster that killed 102 people, including 88 children who were participating in an Easter egg hunt.

New episodes of IT: Welcome to Derry premiere on HBO every Sunday.
