The main challenge for the potential series, IT: Welcome to Derry, was that the villain, Pennywise the Clown, was already defeated in the 2019 film IT Chapter Two. This made a direct sequel unlikely, so the creators came up with a different approach: a prequel. Because the IT movies hinted at Pennywise’s long and complex past, the series explores his decades of activity in the town of Derry, Maine. IT: Welcome to Derry begins 27 years before the events of the first IT movie, with the intention of eventually showing even earlier periods of his history.
The show ‘Welcome to Derry’ established it would frequently revisit the past, using flashbacks from the 1962 setting of the first season. Even the opening credits hinted at important historical events in Derry that would play a role in future storylines. Because the show was well-received and viewership grew each week, fans have been eagerly awaiting news about a second season. Now, it seems like production on the new episodes has already started.
IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Is Officially in the Works
Recent reports about the upcoming DC movie, Brave and the Bold, include an update for fans of IT. According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Andy Muschietti, who also co-created the Welcome to Derry series, is still involved with Brave and the Bold, though development is moving slowly to ensure the film is done well. Muschietti is in high demand thanks to the success of Welcome to Derry, and a second season is being planned. However, HBO hasn’t officially renewed the series yet.
There are a couple of important questions surrounding Season 2 of IT: Welcome to Derry. First, when will HBO officially greenlight the new episodes? It’s now common for shows to start planning seasons before an official order is placed, so the renewal isn’t certain until HBO confirms it. Despite the show’s success and Warner Bros. Discovery’s focus on building franchises, nothing is final in Hollywood. The second question is when Season 2 might actually happen. With many big TV shows now having two-year gaps between seasons, and Welcome to Derry needing to realistically depict the 1930s, production will likely be costly and could impact filming and release dates.
One big question fans have is whether Bill Skarsgard will reprise his role as Pennywise. He was hesitant to return after the first season unless the character offered him something fresh to work with. The first season managed to do that by letting him also play Bob Gray, the man who inspired the creation of Pennywise. Now, the question is whether the show can offer Skarsgard a similarly compelling reason to return for Season 2, giving him more to explore with the character. It remains to be seen if he’ll maintain his desire for a new challenge if he comes back, but so far, there’s no indication he won’t return, even as the show’s direction becomes clearer.
