‘It’s a Clear Upgrade’: Why 007 First Light Will Look and Play Best on PS5 Pro

The PS5 Pro will offer the ultimate experience for IO Interactive’s new James Bond game, 007 First Light, and the studio has shared some details about what players can anticipate.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Senior Global Communications Manager Yann Roskell announced that the game will automatically use PSSR2, Sony’s improved upscaling technology, to enhance its visuals.

He believes this represents a significant improvement in image quality, resulting in more detailed plants and better-looking characters. He notes that the enhancements are particularly noticeable in scenes that have historically been challenging for image upscaling technology.

The PS5 Pro’s new algorithm, PSSR2, delivers a noticeably clearer and more stable picture, significantly reducing the visual noise and imperfections that were sometimes seen with the original launch models.

I understand some of this might sound like tech jargon, but PSSR2 is a significant improvement for the PS5 Pro. Tech experts at Digital Foundry have given it excellent reviews in many different games.

Technical Director Henrik Schlichter enthused:

The improved PSSR technology significantly enhances image quality, delivering cleaner, more stable, and sharper visuals, especially in intricate details. This is a definite improvement for players using the PS5 Pro.

Jon Rocatis, Principal Render Engineer, was pleased to share that they got PSSR2 up and running “in about a day” with minimal adjustments. He noted, “It’s rare for us to be able to say that about new technology.”

Even if you have a standard PS5, you’ll still see some improvement with FSR 3.1.5 upscaling, though the quality won’t be as high as it is on the PS5 Pro. This might not be a big deal for some players, but the PS5 Pro offers the best overall visual experience.

I previously tested this game on a high-end PC and I’m eager to see how well it runs on all versions of the PS5. The developers are really maximizing the hardware, so hopefully it performs consistently across all models.
