When Kentaro Miura, the acclaimed creator of Berserk, passed away in 2021, his trusted friend Kouji Mori and a team at Studio Gaga took on the responsibility of finishing his life’s work. Recently, someone from that team shared that fans can expect a deeply emotional conclusion to the story.
Akira Shimada, who used to edit Kentaro Miura’s work, recently spoke with a magazine about how the final chapters of Berserk are being completed. He explained that only a small group from the manga’s editorial team knows the planned ending, as requested by Sabukaru.
Only four people – myself, Kouji Mori, Yoshimitsu Kurosaki, and Young Animal editor Ryo Takamura – know how Berserk will ultimately end. This commitment to keeping the ending secret shows how carefully Kentaro Miura chose those he trusted with his story’s future.
Only a Handful of People Know Berserk’s Ending — and It Won’t Be an Easy Journey
The dark fantasy series Berserk first appeared in Young Animal magazine on August 25, 1989. It’s set in a medieval Europe-inspired world ravaged by war. The story follows Guts, a solitary swordsman who works as a mercenary, until he crosses paths with a man determined to overcome his humble beginnings and build his own kingdom.
After spending years fighting alongside Griffith’s mercenary band, the Band of the Hawk, Guts’ life is shattered by a terrible betrayal. This drives him on a relentless path to avenge his comrades and his beloved Casca. The story is filled with pain, brutality, and loss, and author Shimada has confirmed that the ending won’t offer easy comfort. He explains it’s neither completely happy nor entirely bleak.
I’ve always been fascinated by the creative partnership behind Berserk. It turns out Kentaro Miura’s closest sounding board was another manga artist, Kouji Mori. In fact, Shimada, a close colleague, has said that meeting Mori was a really key moment in the development of Berserk! Apparently, Miura confided in Mori about the story right up until the very end of his life – that really speaks volumes about how much Mori meant to him, and how vital he was to the whole creative process.
Following Kentaro Miura’s passing, his collaborators, led by Mori, have continued the Berserk manga, releasing 20 new chapters. The latest chapter appeared in Young Animal on June 12, 2026. According to Shimada, Kurosaki is now heavily involved in the artwork. Shimada explained that they’re focusing on getting the chapters finished, prioritizing the amount of content and staying true to Miura’s original style over achieving perfect detail.
Miura’s characters are incredibly detailed and nuanced, and that same level of detail is present in his art – especially in how he designs weapons and armor. To ensure they can maintain the high quality of Miura’s work, Studio Gaga isn’t sticking to a fixed release schedule. As Shimada explains, this approach gives them the freedom to perfect each installment without rushing.
By December 2025, the popular manga series will have been around for over 36 years. Since it first appeared in 1989, it has been translated into more than 17 languages and has sold approximately 70 million copies globally.
Studio GaGa hasn’t hinted at when the story will conclude, but Shimada assures Berserk fans that the wait will be worth it. He describes the ending as being unlike anything readers might expect, but promises it will be incredibly satisfying.
