Even though Bosch originally finished airing on Amazon Prime five years ago, the show remains popular and has a dedicated following. The series had a difficult path to being made – author Michael Connelly’s Bosch books almost became films starring John Travolta! Ultimately, it launched in 2014 and quickly became one of Prime Video’s first big hits.
Titus Welliver was brilliantly cast as the lead detective in Bosch, starring in all seven seasons until 2021. But the story didn’t truly end there. It continued with Bosch: Legacy, which followed Harry as he became a private investigator while his daughter started her career as a police officer. Legacy ran for three seasons and felt very much like a continuation of the original series.
Following the conclusion of Legacy, the story continued with the popular Bosch spinoff Ballard, starring Maggie Q—and Titus Welliver even made a cameo. It’s remarkable that, more than ten years after its debut, Bosch still shows no signs of ending. The series has technically finished twice before, and although Welliver seems to be taking a step back from the role, Amazon remains dedicated to continuing this consistently successful show.
The Bosch Franchise Has At Least Two New Seasons On The Way
It’s no surprise that Ballard has been picked up for a second season in 2025. Unlike Legacy, Ballard works well as a standalone series. While it’s connected to Bosch, the show is built around a captivating main character, so you don’t need to have seen the previous shows to enjoy it.
Welliver will be back for season two of Ballard, but his character will be featured in a different kind of story this time. Bosch: Start of Watch is a prequel set in the 1990s, showing Harry Bosch as a new detective (played by Cameron Monaghan) learning from a seasoned officer named Eli (Omari Hardwick). While the show takes inspiration from details about Harry’s early life mentioned in the novels, it isn’t based on one specific book.
If both Start of Watch and the next season of Ballard do well – and they likely will – the Bosch universe could continue for a long time. Focusing on a younger Bosch as he develops into the familiar, seasoned detective expands the show’s potential, and the historical setting will give it a different feel from the original series. Unfortunately, Titus Welliver doesn’t seem to be involved in the prequel, although there’s still a chance we might see an older Bosch appear briefly in the future.
Bosch Is Prime Video’s Most Enduring Series
A key advantage for the Bosch series has always been the extensive source material. Michael Connelly has been writing about Harry Bosch for many years, and his strongest novels are captivating thrillers with well-developed characters and realistic conversations. This is a major reason why Bosch has remained popular. Viewers continue to tune in because the show creates a rich and engaging world, and it still feels fresh even after many seasons.
Prime Video has had success turning popular book series into hit shows, like Reacher and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. With new shows like Ballard and Bosch: Start of Watch, they could continue this trend for a long time. It would be great to see Titus Welliver reprise his role as Harry Bosch beyond guest appearances, perhaps even in a standalone movie, similar to the Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War spinoff.
Five years after the original series concluded, the current direction of Bosch feels uncertain. However, if the show maintains its high quality and remains faithful to both the character and Michael Connelly’s books, it could easily continue for another ten years.
