It’s Time Marvel Sends Venom Back to Basics

Since his debut in Marvel Comics, Venom has consistently evolved, with significant changes happening over the years. The latest update in 2025 completely disconnects him from his previous history. This not only impacts what fans enjoyed about Venom, but also fundamentally changes Eddie Brock, deviating from the character’s established development. Ultimately, there’s a need for Venom to return to his roots and recapture the essence of the character that made him so popular in the first place.

The recent storyline where Mary Jane Watson became Venom has been interesting, but it’s time to bring Eddie Brock and Venom back together and return to their classic dynamic.

Venom Has Lost Something Without Eddie Brock

Venom has had many different hosts throughout its history in Marvel Comics, starting with Spider-Man (Peter Parker) and then Eddie Brock. Since then, the symbiote has bonded with characters like Mac Gargan, Flash Thompson, Lee Price, Angelo Fortunato, and Dylan Brock, and most recently, Mary Jane Watson. Despite all these connections, Eddie Brock remains Venom’s most iconic host, and many fans feel something is off when they aren’t together.

It’s odd to see Venom and Mary Jane together, but it does keep MJ relevant in Marvel Comics, especially since she’s currently separated from Peter Parker. Unfortunately, this pairing hasn’t benefited Venom. While their relationship is intriguing, it doesn’t compare to the strong bond Venom shares with Eddie Brock. And things are complicated by the fact that Eddie is still around, now bonded with a particularly dangerous symbiote.

Eddie Brock has merged with Carnage, which is dangerous because Carnage is a ruthless killer with an uncontrollable urge to kill. Eddie is attempting to steer Carnage towards targeting only the most villainous characters in the Marvel Universe – a dynamic reminiscent of the TV series Dexter. While this storyline is compelling, it shouldn’t last indefinitely. After it reaches a natural ending, Marvel should quickly reunite Eddie with Venom.

It’s Time For The Lethal Protector to Return

As a huge Venom fan, I really think Eddie Brock and the symbiote need to reconnect – things were just better when they were working together! Honestly, I want to see Venom back in his role as the Lethal Protector, protecting the innocent. Eddie needs the symbiote to get his life back on track, you know? And I’m a little worried about Marvel bringing Knull into things with this Queen in Black storyline, especially with Hela involved. It feels like it’s going to complicate things and honestly, the more they change Venom, the more they lose what made him so unique and awesome in the first place.

Even if Eddie Brock and Venom reunite and Venom reverts to his old habits, it’s a more compelling direction than the current comic book storylines. While writers Al Ewing and Charles Soule have done good work, and the crossover between Thor and Venom sounds promising, the current Mary Jane Watson as Venom arc feels repetitive, similar to past stories with Eddie Brock and Carnage. This storyline needs a clear beginning and end, and a fresh start afterward. That reset is planned for February 2026 with the Amazing Spider-Man: Death Spiral event, which will wrap up the existing Venom and Carnage narratives and pave the way for future stories.

It’s great to see Eddie Brock and Venom teaming up once more. The Marvel Universe is always evolving with big events, but it would be good to give characters like Venom a chance to settle and develop more consistently.
