ITV’s Joan confirmed not to return for a second season due to cast scheduling issues

Following its debut on ITV last year, Joan garnered widespread acclaim from both viewers and critics.

Although the show received rave reviews and its conclusion clearly set up a potential sequel, it appears that there won’t be another season produced.

Since we faced limitations with the availability of casting options and had important talks about joint production, this unfortunately prevented us from making a second series.

The announcement about cancellation – despite the series’ success and the many possibilities for further storylines – seems logical considering the lead actress, Sophie Turner, has plans to star in several high-profile projects coming up.

Turner will soon join forces with Kit Harington from Game of Thrones in the upcoming gothic horror movie titled The Dreadful, and he has been chosen to portray Lara Croft in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider series on Amazon Prime Video.

Besides the projects already in progress, Turner is also slated to appear in the upcoming thriller movie “Trust” and Amazon Prime Video’s series “Steal.” Given this busy schedule, fitting in a second installment of “Joan” seems challenging.

In this six-part production, Turner assumed the role of the infamous real-life jewel thief, Joan Hannington. Her exploits ranged from a daring act of swallowing diamonds to executing significant burglaries.

Drawing inspiration from Hannington’s 2002 memoir, “I Am What I Am: The True Story of Britain’s Most Notorious Jewel Thief,” the ITV drama embarked on a thrilling adventure, tracing Joan’s initial forays into crime as she and her six-year-old daughter Kelly fled their home in Kent.

As she encounters Boisie (Frank Dillane), their relationship blossoms into a romantic tale. Subsequently, we accompany them as they join forces to execute their most significant missions to date.

Sadly, Joan and Boisie’s romance concluded tragically when, following the botched heist they had planned together, Boisie met his untimely end in a dark alleyway.

Instead, the series concluded by jumping forward in time, where Joan encountered Albie, a friend of Boisie, whom she had left behind during a critical moment in the finale. (Gershwyn Eustache Jr played this role.)

When they encountered each other once more, Joan appeared determined to exact retribution. Upon giving him a briefcase filled with cash, she warned him to stay vigilant.

After serving time in prison, it’s intriguing to consider how the narrative might unfold, exploring how Joan adapts to life without Boisie, whether she reconnects with her daughter Kelly, and if her quest for revenge against Albie reaches a satisfying conclusion.

But alas, we’ll just have to hold our burning questions and ‘what ifs’.

Although Joan may no longer appear, the show undeniably made her fascinating story the main focus, ensuring it was visible to everyone.

Previously, Turner shared with Harper’s Bazaar that a key factor attracting her to the scripts was that it was a “true tale, and the most extraordinary one imaginable.

She embodies resilience and ambition, making it impossible not to be smitten by her charm. I wouldn’t dream of handing her over to someone else.
