Jack Black has appeared in many sequels throughout his career, including four Kung Fu Panda films, two Goosebumps movies, and two Jumanji films with a third on the way. He’s also involved with a new Super Mario Bros. movie planned for 2026 and a second Minecraft film. While most fans would likely want to see a sequel to his 2003 hit, School of Rock, Black himself has a different film in mind – one released in 2006 – that he’d love to revisit.
Jack Black recently told ScreenRant he’d love to remake his 2006 film, Nacho Libre. The movie centers around a cook and Catholic friar, played by Black, who pursues his dream of becoming a luchador wrestler to raise money for the orphanage at his monastery. Despite a $35 million budget, the film was a big hit, earning $129 million and gaining a dedicated cult following. It remains the second-highest-grossing live-action movie ever produced by Nickelodeon, following only Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Paul Rudd brought up the possibility of a School of Rock sequel, and Jack Black said that would be amazing. However, Black explained he’d rather revisit his role in Nacho Libre. He still wants to play the character, but admits it’s been two decades, so doing a sequel now might feel strange.
What Would Nacho Libre 2 Look Like?
I absolutely loved the movie where Jack Black played Ignacio! He was raised in an orphanage connected to a monastery in Oaxaca, and he always wanted to be a luchador – a masked wrestler. But the monastery didn’t approve, thinking it was too vain. It was so cool when Ignacio got fed up with not being able to provide for the kids and secretly became a luchador anyway! He started gaining fans and earning money for the orphanage, which was awesome. But things got tricky when someone found out who he really was, and it put everyone at the monastery at risk. It was a really fun and heartwarming story!
In the end, Ignacio from Nacho Libre earns enough money to rescue the orphanage and goes on to become a professional wrestler. This allows him to buy the children a bus with his winnings. The film did well in theaters and, despite receiving some mixed reviews, quickly became a beloved cult classic. It even inspired a Nintendo DS video game in 2006, and wrestling promotions like WWE continue to reference it, keeping its spirit alive with fans.
Since 2006, Jack Black has repeatedly expressed interest in making a sequel to Nacho Libre. He’s talked with the film’s director, Jared Hess, about the possibility and hopes they can collaborate on a project again, even if a sequel doesn’t happen. They’ve even brainstormed ideas, like sending the character Ignacio to Japan to wrestle. Unfortunately, Hess has said that Paramount Pictures hasn’t shown any interest in a sequel, though he’s eager to work with Jack Black again in the future.
It’s funny, Jared Hess and Mike White never got around to making that Nacho Libre follow-up they always talked about. But years later, Hess directed A Minecraft Movie, and wow, it really took off! It made almost a billion dollars, which is incredible. Now there’s talk of a sequel, and if that one does well too, maybe, just maybe, we’ll finally get that Nacho Libre movie they both dreamed of. As a film fan, I’m really hoping it happens!
