Although The Minecraft Movie is a major action-fantasy film for Jack Black, it doesn’t quite reach the level of one of his previous works in the same genre. Jack Black’s successful films demonstrate his range as an actor, proving he’s capable of much more than just comedy.

He’s also been a key part of popular animated blockbusters like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Kung Fu Panda series. But despite all that, there’s another type of movie he appears in frequently.
Jack Black frequently appears in action-comedy fantasy films, starting with movies like the 2010 remake of Gulliver’s Travels and continuing with 2015’s Goosebumps. He seems to excel in this type of movie, as evidenced by the huge success of A Minecraft Movie, which earned $960 million worldwide. Still, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is considered his strongest performance in the genre.

As a big movie fan, I’ve always found the Jumanji story pretty interesting. It started with the 1995 adventure film, which was based on Chris Van Allsburg’s book from 1981. Even that first movie took some liberties with the original story, but the 2017 sequel, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, completely changed things up – it really flipped the whole concept on its head!
The original Jumanji movie from 1995 featured a cursed board game that unleashed dangers into the real world when played. In contrast, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle involved a cursed video game that transported players into the game’s world. This new take allowed Dwayne Johnson to deliver one of his best performances to date.

When Bethany, a popular but shallow high schooler played by Madison Iseman, gets involved, she’s transformed into Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon – a short, bookish academic. This gives audiences the fun of watching Black portray a self-absorbed but kind-hearted teenager stuck in the body of an older professor.
The comedian really plays up this running joke, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle surprisingly makes it genuinely funny. Black is fantastic and completely steals the show, whether she’s teaching someone how to flirt or enjoying her new, male body.
Even though A Minecraft Movie is well-made, it doesn’t feel as emotionally impactful as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a clever and touching coming-of-age story disguised as an action-packed fantasy, and it remains Jack Black’s strongest film in this type of genre, even with the success of A Minecraft Movie.
