It’s been three years since John Krasinski last played Jack Ryan, but fans won’t have to wait much longer – his new film spin-off arrives next week!
The fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan arrived in 2023, bringing mixed emotions for viewers. While fans enjoyed seeing more of John Krasinski as the iconic character, they also knew this would be the final season featuring him in the role, at least for now.
Good news for fans: a new film, “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War,” was announced in 2024 as a continuation of the popular TV show. However, since the last season aired three years ago, you might need a quick refresher on how things ended.
Before you see the new movie, here’s a quick refresher on what happened in season 4 of the show.
Jack Ryan season 4 recap: What happened ahead of the new film

In Season 4 of Jack Ryan, Jack Ryan faces his most challenging assignment yet as he temporarily leads the CIA. While getting used to the demands of this new position alongside acting director Elizabeth Wright, he discovers corruption inside the agency connected to a dangerous international criminal organization called The Triad.
During the investigation, Ryan learned that Thomas Miller, a former CIA director (played by John Schwab), had secretly worked to connect terrorists and drug cartels using a hidden operation called Project Pluto. Following a thrilling pursuit across international borders, Ryan and his team worked to intercept bombs being smuggled between the United States and Mexico, and he successfully prevented a devastating attack.
The season concluded with Ryan revealing widespread corruption in the CIA and the US government at a Senate hearing. He testified that individuals prioritizing personal gain over the country’s safety pose a threat equal to any foreign enemy.
This season also explored the rekindled romance between Jack Ryan and Cathy Mueller (Abbie Cornish). After not appearing in seasons two and three, Cornish returned for the final season. Season four showed the couple already back together, and concluded with their relationship stronger than ever as they headed off for a well-deserved vacation, hand-in-hand.
Why was there only four seasons of the Jack Ryan TV show?
Even before the fourth season aired, it was revealed the show wouldn’t return for a fifth. According to Deadline, this was always the plan – the producers intended to create only four seasons from the beginning.
Reports indicate Krasinski initially agreed to star in the show for four seasons, implying the series concluded naturally when his contract finished. As he was the main actor, the show couldn’t continue without him.
How is the Jack Ryan film expected to follow the story line of the show?

As a big Jack Ryan fan, I’m really excited about ‘Ghost War’! It’s being called a direct continuation of season four of the show, and the story is drawing heavily from the larger world Tom Clancy created with his books. Basically, it throws Jack right back into the thick of things – a secret operation goes sideways, and he uncovers a really dangerous plot. It sounds like a classic Jack Ryan adventure!
With time running out, Jack finds himself up against a dangerous, unauthorized black-ops team. He teams up with his former boss, James Greer, and MI6 agent Emma Marlow to untangle a complex plot filled with betrayal. This mission forces them to confront secrets from their past, making it their most challenging and personal yet.

Jack Ryan cast: Who will be returning for the Ghost War film?
John Krasinski is back as Jack Ryan, and Wendell Pierce will again play his boss, James Greer. This season, they’ll be joined by Sienna Miller, who plays Emma Marlowe, a British intelligence officer and important partner on Ryan’s newest assignment.
Michael Kelly, known from “House of Cards,” and Betty Gabriel, from “Clickbait,” are reprising their roles as private security contractor Mike November and CIA director Elizabeth Wright. Joining them are new cast members Mckenna Bridger, Max Beesley, Douglas Hodge, and JJ Feild.
Notably absent from the movie’s cast are two important characters: Cathy Mueller, played by Abbie Cornish, and Ding Chavez, played by Michael Peña. Cornish had a significant role in the first season, then didn’t appear in seasons one and two before returning for the fourth and final season. A spin-off series centered around Peña’s character, Domingo Chavez (a popular character from the books who joined in season 4), was planned but ultimately cancelled. It’s currently unknown if he will be in the upcoming film.
