Jack Whitehall on why his new Virginia Woolf adaptation will “speak to a modern audience”

Jack Whitehall believes his upcoming movie, Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day, will resonate with viewers today. He’s shared his thoughts on why the film feels relevant for contemporary audiences.

The comedian joins Timothy Spall, Jennifer Saunders, and Lily Allen in the upcoming movie based on the author’s second book.

In a recent interview with TopMob, just before the show’s release (featured in the video above), the actor shared that despite not being familiar with the original novel, he immediately loved the script written by Justine Waddell.

I was immediately drawn in by the story’s heartfelt tone,” he explained. “Justine wrote a brilliant script – funny, engaging, and with themes that resonate today. It’s simply a very captivating story.”

The movie centers on Katherine Hilbery, a young astronomer, and her struggles against the sexism of her time. Haley Bennett, known for her roles in ‘Cyrano’ and ‘The Last Frontier’, plays the main character.

Bennet enjoyed Katherine’s strong independence and appreciated that the character didn’t focus on romantic relationships. She also felt the movie had a similar style to films made by directors like Greta Gerwig and John Hughes.

She also pointed out that the story focuses equally on themes like family, friendships, who we are, and how we connect with others, not just romance.

I really enjoyed the warm and playful relationships within the Hilbery family, and how they beautifully brought to life the ideas Virginia Woolf presented in her work.

I was really pleased to hear Bennett and Whitehall say they hoped the movie would inspire people to check out more of Virginia Woolf’s books! They even suggested ‘Night and Day’ could be a great place to start for anyone new to her writing – like a perfect introduction to her style.

Bennett explained the adaptation aims for a funny, quirky, and heartwarming family story, which isn’t usually found in Virginia Woolf’s novels. He hopes this approach will make it enjoyable even for those who might not typically read her more complex writing.

Whitehall also mentioned he was now eager to read more of the author’s famous works, and confirmed that this particular book was a great place to start.

Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day is released in UK cinemas on Friday 19 June.
