Jackie Chan Goes Full ‘John Wick’ in Throwback Action Thriller ‘The Foreigner’ That’s Now on Streaming

Even now, Jackie Chan is still amazing at performing action scenes and fighting off opponents. Famous for his incredible stunts in movies like Police Story, Rumble in the Bronx, and Drunken Master, he continues to deliver thrilling performances. One of his recent films, a fast-paced crime thriller showcasing his signature physical style, is now available on a new streaming service. You might have missed it when it first came out on Netflix in 2017, but The Foreigner deserves to be seen, and is now accessible to a wider audience.

Originally a Netflix film, The Foreigner is now available on Paramount+. The movie stars Jackie Chan alongside veteran actor Pierce Brosnan. Directed by Martin Campbell, who also directed Casino Royale and GoldenEye, The Foreigner tells the story of a man, played by Chan, who seeks revenge for his daughter after she is killed in a terrorist attack in the UK. Here’s what the movie is about:

Okay, so I just saw this film, and it’s a real gut-punch. It centers around Quan, a quiet, everyday guy running a business in London. His life is completely shattered when his daughter is tragically killed in a terrorist attack. But this isn’t just about grief; it’s about revenge. He becomes absolutely consumed with finding those responsible, and his investigation quickly pulls him into a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a high-ranking government official. What’s fascinating is that this official seems to be hiding secrets of his own, and those secrets might be the key to uncovering the truth behind the attack and the people who committed it. It’s a tense, gripping story with a lot of layers.

While The Foreigner isn’t a typical, high-octane Jackie Chan action film, it’s considered one of his strongest movies in recent years. Some fans even believe it’s his last truly great performance, as he now primarily does voice work for animated projects and appears in lower-quality action movies that wouldn’t have seen a wide release in the past.

‘The Foreigner’ Is Jackie Chan’s Best Modern Movie

Jackie Chan’s career can be divided into three phases: his early work in Hong Kong films, his rise to fame in American cinema, and a later period of lower-budget action and animated movies. The Foreigner stands out from this last phase as a surprisingly well-received film, earning a 66% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

I was really happy to see that people actually loved this movie! It got a 72% approval rating, which is fantastic. Even on IMDb, it has a solid 7.0 rating from users. That’s a huge improvement over some of his other films from the late 2010s – things like The Iron Mask, Vanguard, and Bleeding Steel all barely reached a 5 out of 10, so this is a real standout!

‘The Foreigner’ Swaps Big Stunts for Intense Shootouts

Jackie Chan is famous for his incredible stunts – hanging from helicopters, climbing buildings, and pushing himself to the limit for action movies. But his latest film, The Foreigner, is different. It doesn’t rely on those huge spectacles. Instead, Chan takes on a more dangerous role, showcasing a tougher, more ruthless side reminiscent of the character John Wick.

Beyond its straightforward story of revenge – where Jackie Chan’s character systematically takes down enemies to reach the mastermind – The Foreigner delivers exciting gun battles and close-quarters combat. While Jackie Chan usually avoids firearms in his films, he skillfully integrates them into the already impressive action sequences here. If you haven’t seen The Foreigner yet, it’s definitely worth watching.
