Recently, early footage of a cancelled remake of the classic PlayStation 2 game Jak and Daxter has surfaced online. Before creating popular franchises like Uncharted and The Last of Us, Naughty Dog first gained recognition with the Jak series during the PS2 era. The original game, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, launched in 2001 and was followed by two sequels in 2003 and 2004, as well as several spin-off titles. Although the Jak and Daxter series hasn’t seen a new release in almost 20 years, a revival effort in the form of a remaster was recently started, but ultimately abandoned.
Developer Travis Howe recently shared an animated cutscene on social media, reimagining a scene from the classic game Jak and Daxter with modern graphics. Howe, formerly of Sanzaru Games, clarified that this wasn’t an official PlayStation project. He and a small team of animators created it as a pitch to convince PlayStation to remake or remaster the game. While PlayStation ultimately passed on the idea, the cutscene gives fans a glimpse of what a modern Jak and Daxter could look like with updated textures and lighting.
You can get a look at the footage for yourself in the tweet below:
Animator Travis Howe, who worked at Sanzaru Games from 2018 to 2026, shared that a team once created a pitch for a remastered version of Jak & Daxter. He was asked to create a short, fully animated scene, recreating one from the original game, to demonstrate how the updated version could look. This pitch wasn’t commissioned by Sony; it was a fan-made project intended to gain their approval.

Will Jak and Daxter Ever Be Brought Back by PlayStation?

It’s looking increasingly unlikely that PlayStation will revive Jak and Daxter. The game’s original developer is now focused on a new project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and PlayStation’s current strategy appears to be shifting away from revisiting older franchises. This trend is evident in the fact that other classic PlayStation 2 exclusives, like Sly Cooper and Twisted Metal, haven’t made a comeback recently either.
A remaster or remake of the original Jak and Daxter games, or even the whole trilogy, would be the most sensible way to bring the series back. However, the news that PlayStation isn’t currently interested in this idea doesn’t suggest they’ll approve such a project anytime soon.
