The James Bond films are finally heading to Netflix on January 21st! At least four movies will be available to stream in the US and some other countries. This is happening thanks to a new agreement between Netflix and Amazon-MGM, the company that owns the rights to the James Bond franchise. While there was a previous, unexplained delay, everything is now set for the films to arrive later this month.
Initially, Netflix announced that only four James Bond films would be available for streaming in January: Pierce Brosnan’s Die Another Day, along with Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and No Time to Die. However, reports suggest that viewers in some countries may actually have access to all twenty-five James Bond movies, though it’s currently unknown which regions will offer the full collection.
Netflix is now streaming titles from Amazon-MGM as part of a larger agreement between the two companies. This month, subscribers can enjoy films from franchises like Rocky and Legally Blonde, along with original series from Amazon’s Prime Video, including The Man in the High Castle. This move allows Amazon to reach viewers who don’t currently subscribe to Prime Video and suggests a possible ongoing partnership with Netflix.
What’s Next for James Bond?
With the James Bond series heading to Netflix, fans are still wondering what the future holds for the famous spy. The franchise has seen big shifts recently, starting with Daniel Craig’s last film, No Time to Die, in 2021. That movie surprisingly killed off Bond, hinting at a major reset for the series.
When Amazon bought MGM Studios in 2022, they also acquired the rights to the James Bond films. Shortly after, Barbara Broccoli, who had produced the Bond films for many years, left the studio. When Denis Villeneuve, the director of Dune, was announced as the director for the next James Bond film – the twenty-sixth in the series – many fans felt relieved. Currently, details about Villeneuve’s Bond movie are scarce, but speculation about the lead actor is plentiful. Actors like Henry Cavill, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Idris Elba have been frequently mentioned by fans, though neither Villeneuve nor Amazon has confirmed any casting choices. Production on the film is expected to begin after Dune: Part Three is released later this year, so a release date hasn’t been set yet.
As a huge Bond fan, I’m really excited about the possibility of Amazon taking over the franchise – it could mean we get a lot more 007 in the future! But honestly, I’m also a little nervous. I’m hoping whoever they choose to direct – someone like Denis Villeneuve would be amazing – really understands what makes Bond, Bond. I want a movie that feels familiar and respects the classic films, but also isn’t afraid to try something new and fresh.
