James Cameron has shared that he considered directing Wicked long before the recent adaptations directed by Jon M. Chu. While Cameron is famous for blockbuster films like Titanic and Avatar – having directed three of the four highest-grossing movies ever – he’s never actually directed a musical movie before.
I was listening to Matthew Belloni’s podcast, The Town, and James Cameron dropped a fascinating tidbit. He revealed he was seriously considered to direct the upcoming Wicked movie, and even had meetings with Universal Pictures about it! It really got me thinking about how big these projects can feel – Cameron was talking about movies needing to be events, and this certainly sounds like one. You can find his full comments below.
I enjoy movies like Dune and Wicked. I almost worked on Wicked a while ago. I’m a big fan of the story – The Wizard of Oz is actually one of my favorite movies. This was about fifteen years ago.
Despite not being able to locate the right song, Cameron remains interested in creating a movie musical. He’s always loved musicals – in fact, The Wizard of Oz is his favorite film.
Cameron pointed out that it took nearly 15 years from his initial meeting with Universal Pictures for the first Wicked movie to finally happen. Several attempts were made to adapt Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel and the 2003 Broadway musical Wicked, but none of them worked out.
Over the years, many famous actresses – including Whoopi Goldberg, Salma Hayek, Nicole Kidman, Lady Gaga, Emma Thompson, Claire Danes, Laurie Metcalf, and Michelle Pfeiffer – have been considered for roles in different versions of Wicked. Several acclaimed directors, such as J.J. Abrams, Ryan Murphy, James Mangold, and Rob Marshall, were also potential candidates to direct the film at various times.
Like many of his films, Cameron’s Wicked and Wicked: For Good have been huge hits with audiences. The first movie earned $756 million around the world, and For Good brought in $226 million globally during its opening weekend.
Cameron’s version of Wicked would likely have been quite different from Stephen Chu’s. Cameron is known for directing large-scale, imaginative blockbusters, like the Avatar films, and building immersive worlds. While Chu had experience with musicals from In the Heights, Wicked would have been Cameron’s first venture into the genre.
Despite previously considering the film Wicked, Cameron remains interested in directing a musical, but he’s currently focused on the next Avatar movies and other projects. These include writing a script for a seventh Terminator film and working on an adaptation of Last Train from Hiroshima, a story about a Japanese man’s survival of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
