James Cameron Slams Amy Poehler’s Golden Globes Jab About His Marriage

James Cameron thinks this joke should have been terminated. 

The director of Avatar: Fire & Ash recently criticized a joke made by Amy Poehler at the 2013 Golden Globes, which was about his former wife, Kathryn Bigelow.

Amy Poehler joked about Kathryn Bigelow, the director of Zero Dark Thirty, saying she trusts someone who understands intense filmmaking because she was married to James Cameron for three years.

Cameron has criticized the joke as disrespectful, telling The New York Times that it was inappropriate for an event meant to honor movies and the people who make them, not to be used for insults.

I don’t easily get offended and I’m used to being teased, but that particular joke crossed a line. It revealed a lot about how people perceive me, even though they don’t really know me or my work, said the director of Titanic, who was married to Bigelow from 1989 to 1991.

Look, I’ve followed James Cameron for ages, and honestly, it’s come out over the years that he can be…intense. People say he really pushes his cast and crew, demands everything from them. It’s like, he’s a perfectionist, and that means things can get tough on set. But honestly? I think that’s part of why his movies are so amazing – he gets the absolute best out of everyone, even if it’s not always easy for them!

Kate Winslet told The New York Times that things weren’t always easy, and there were times when the person she was working with would get angry and create difficult situations.

You know, working in this industry, you see people evolve. It was fascinating to witness James Cameron’s journey. After over two decades since Titanic, he surprised me by asking for my thoughts on Avatar: Fire & Ash. And honestly? It was like seeing a whole new side of him. I told him, ‘Wow, this is a different Jim!’ He’d really grown and pushed his creative boundaries.

Kate Winslet isn’t the only person who’s noticed a change in the 71-year-old James Cameron. Years ago, Sigourney Weaver advised Cameron to be gentler with a young actor, but now she’s getting to know a different side of him.

Weaver remembered walking over to the director and explaining that when he criticizes one actor, it affects the whole cast. He pointed out that the actress was facing a real challenge and suggested they film something else to give her time to adjust to the director’s instructions.

“He’s a good guy,” she continued. “I really do think Jim has mellowed.”

Indeed, Cameron’s approach for directing Avatar has changed. 

He said he had a change in perspective. He realized that the relationships you build and the creative journey itself are more important than the final product, like a movie.

From my experience, creating a positive and supportive environment on set—or in any creative endeavor, really—always yields better results. Instead of focusing on what not to do, I’ve found that encouraging people to showcase their talents and bring their best selves to the table is the key to truly exceptional work. It’s amazing how much more you get when you build people up instead of tearing them down.

He did not respond to her remarks publicly.

Five years ago, Sharon shared with Larry King that Ashton seemed annoyed when he was on The Talk in 2014, after she mispronounced his name.

I remember him asking me, completely out of the blue, about my background and what I’d accomplished in the business. Honestly, my immediate reaction was pretty fierce! In a 2022 TikTok trend, JoJo Siwa called Candace Cameron Bure the “rudest” celebrity she’d met, explaining that Bure had once turned down her request for a photo on the red carpet. Soon after, Cameron Bure apologized, saying she regretted hurting Siwa’s feelings when she was eleven and admitting, “I feel crummy, JoJo, I’m so sorry.”

Candace and the other person resolved their differences. However, when asked months later if her network, Great American Family, would ever feature same-sex couples as the main characters in its holiday films, she stated that it wouldn’t, explaining that the network would continue to focus on traditional marriage.

JoJo, who publicly shared they are part of the LGBTQ+ community in 2021, responded to the actress’ comment on Instagram, calling it “rude and hurtful to the entire LGBTQ+ community.”

In June 2021, Courtney Love claimed Olivia Rodrigo had copied the album cover art for her band Hole in a promotional photo without giving proper credit. Olivia responded with a simple, “Love u and live through this sooooo much.” Courtney then playfully replied, “Olivia – you’re welcome. My favorite florist is in Notting Hill, London! I was watching Watch What Happens Live the other night, and they asked Henry Winkler why he and Tom Hanks didn’t really click while filming Turner & Hooch back in 1989. It was fascinating to hear him talk about what happened on set!

I directed the movie for thirteen days, and then Jeff Katzenberg, the producer, told me to go home – that I had everything I needed, he said.

Winkler and Hanks’ dog seemed to hit it off. “I really loved that dog,” Winkler said, “We got along great.”

He also refused to admit if he’s even seen the flick.

Anyone who watched The Hills likely remembers that famous line from Lauren, spoken at the start of season three. The drama between her and Heidi began when Heidi started dating Spencer Pratt, and it escalated when Lauren claimed Heidi and Spencer spread a false rumor about her and Jason Wahler making a sex tape.

Tyrese and Dwayne Johnson had a public falling out after the release date for Fast & Furious 9 was delayed until April 2020. On the same day, a spin-off movie featuring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham was announced for 2019. Shortly after, Tyrese said he would leave Fast 9 if Dwayne Johnson remained involved.

Tyrese recently discussed the long-standing conflict with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, telling Van Lathan on The Red Pill podcast that he still hasn’t spoken to Johnson directly, though they plan to talk. He did mention he’d spoken with one of Johnson’s producing partners, but not with Johnson himself.

Tyrese admitted he shouldn’t have publicly shared frustrations he’d heard from others connected to the franchise. He explained he was the one who spoke out, which he now recognizes was unprofessional and a mistake.

Taylor Swift and Katy Perry had a long-running public disagreement, rumored to be the inspiration behind Swift’s song “Bad Blood.” The conflict, which supposedly began due to a dispute over a dancer and competition between their concert tours, was resolved when Perry sent Swift an olive branch as a peace offering before Swift’s Reputation Tour began.

Okay, you guys, you will NOT believe this! I just walked into my dressing room and there was, like, a REAL olive branch waiting for me! Seriously, it meant the world. I’m still freaking out a little, honestly!

For years, Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, stars of Sex and the City, successfully dismissed rumors of a feud. However, those rumors resurfaced when Kim chose not to participate in a third movie and subsequently made comments about her co-star that sparked controversy.

In a September 2017 episode of Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen asked Sarah Jessica Parker how she felt about Kim Cattrall telling Piers Morgan they had only ever been coworkers, not friends.

I was so shocked when I heard about this years ago! Apparently, back in 2008, the actress who played a major role on Grey’s Anatomy really upset the show’s creator. She actually asked to be removed from being considered for an Emmy award, and her reason was that the storylines she was given just weren’t strong enough to deserve a nomination. It was a pretty bold move, and it caused a lot of drama at the time!

Shonda Rhimes discussed Katherine Heigl’s departure in a 2012 interview with Oprah Winfrey on Oprah’s Next Chapter. The conflict between Kanye West and Taylor Swift began in 2009 when he interrupted her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards. While they later reconciled and became friends, their relationship fell apart in 2016 after Kanye released his song “Famous,” which mentioned Taylor by name.
