James Gunn has announced that Lars Eidinger will play Brainiac in the upcoming Superman film, scheduled for release in 2027. The movie will feature an unlikely alliance between Lex Luthor and Superman as they work together to defeat the highly intelligent android.
Brainiac is finally making his live-action movie debut, and fans are especially excited to see him in James Gunn’s next DC Universe film. The character first appeared in 1958 in Action Comics #242, created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino.
Brainiac, a highly intelligent android from the planet Colu, collects knowledge from across the universe. This mission will likely bring him into conflict with Superman and Lex Luthor. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are returning as Superman and Luthor, and Michael Eidinger has joined the cast. While the full story is still secret, fans are hoping to see Brainiac use his signature ability to shrink cities.
There were reports earlier this month that actors like Claes Bang, Matt Smith, and Sam Rockwell were being considered for the role of Brainiac. However, James Gunn has once again shown that these kinds of rumors are often inaccurate, as the final casting choices usually surprise everyone.
Michael Eidinger has acted in films like Olivier Assayas’ Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper, and most recently appeared in the Netflix film Jay Kelly.
James Gunn is Pressing on With His DCU Plans

Warner Bros.
James Gunn has acknowledged that the initial lineup of movies and TV shows he announced for the DC Universe (DCU) has evolved. Several planned films have shifted, and Gunn recently shared what a typical workday looks like for him, providing updates on upcoming DC projects like Man of Tomorrow.
What I love about this job is that every day is different! Right now, I’m mostly focused on getting ‘Man of Tomorrow’ ready – that means storyboarding, having meetings with the various teams, location scouting, and casting. I also spend time reviewing cuts of ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Lanterns’, talking about marketing for all our projects, reading and giving feedback on new scripts, and helping the ‘Batman 2’ team stay on track. I’m eagerly awaiting the first cut of ‘Clayface’, and I’m constantly approving designs for various elements. There’s probably a lot I’m leaving out, too!
