A peculiar question about Batman needs answering from James Gunn, following a hint about the Dark Knight joining the DC Universe in the 2025 film, Superman. Superman not only introduced us to David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel, but also a host of other fresh faces for the revamped DCU. We met the initial Justice Gang – including Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl – but many of DC Comics’ most famous superheroes haven’t been formally introduced in this new universe yet. This definitely includes Bruce Wayne’s Batman, although DC Studios has given us glimpses of his arrival on a few occasions.
It’s definitely exciting that DC Studios is hinting at Batman’s first appearance, but something Superman said about the Dark Knight has caused a bit of confusion. Viewers noticed that when the people of Metropolis were told to leave due to a dangerous rift created by Lex Luthor, many of them decided to go to Gotham City. In DC Comics, Gotham is where heroes like Batman operate, but it’s also notorious for its massive criminal element and is known for creating some of DC’s scariest villains – meaning it’s probably not much safer than Metropolis itself.
Some of Superman’s Refugees Chose A Poor Exit
As a movie lover, I’ve been hearing buzz that the Gotham City we’ll see in James Gunn’s DCU might be a bit different than the one in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Robert Pattinson’s Gotham was seriously dark and dangerous, but things seem to be shifting. We’ve gotten glimpses from set photos of the Clayface production, and even some scenes from Creature Commandos, that show a Gotham that looks… well, more normal and diverse. It’s exciting! Still, knowing DC, I’m sure the city will still be home to some seriously creepy villains. That does make me wonder though – if it’s *that* Gotham, why would people feel safe enough to even *go* there, let alone evacuate to it?
Many of DC Comics’ most famous villains, including the Riddler, the Penguin, Poison Ivy, Two-Face, and the Court of Owls, all originated in Gotham City’s criminal network. Arguably the most iconic villain from DC Comics also calls Gotham home, and Clayface’s on-set photos might have hinted at the Joker’s first appearance in the DC Universe. Considering the sheer number of dangerous and erratic supervillains living in Gotham, it’s surprising that the people of Metropolis would even consider going there for safety, despite the cities being relatively close. They wouldn’t have been any better off, though.
Clayface is setting the stage to really show us Gotham City within the DCU – a place we haven’t seen much of yet. Before The Brave and the Bold introduces a new actor playing Batman as Bruce Wayne, along with the rest of the Bat-Family, other projects might give us glimpses of the city. These characters will all be central to the world of heroes and vigilantes in Gotham. We’ve enjoyed the hints about Gotham so far in the DCU, but we’re looking forward to learning more about the city’s details and how people live there.
