James Gunn is bringing a distinctive vision to his role as co-CEO of DC Studios. Both Creature Commandos and Peacemaker showcase his style, focusing on flawed characters who initially cause trouble before finding a better path. Luckily, expectations for these particular teams are modest, so even a decent effort feels like a win. However, the pressure is much higher for DC’s biggest heroes, especially Superman, whose new look and story are already generating a lot of online discussion.
David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman stands out because he shows a real sense of vulnerability. While Superman has always been known for his kindness, this version readily accepts both victories and defeats, growing from every experience. Director James Gunn often highlights characters’ weaknesses, putting them on full display before ultimately turning their stories around. He’s already planning a similar approach for Batman, even before an actor has been chosen for the role.
James Gunn Has Already Made His Feelings About Batman Very Apparent
James Gunn quickly shared his plans for Batman after taking charge at DC Studios. He confirmed that Matt Reeves would continue developing The Batman universe, including the The Penguin series, and would also produce a new film, The Brave and the Bold, to be directed by Andy Muschietti, known for It. This film will feature a unique take on Batman, teaming him up with his son, Damian Wayne. Since the initial announcement, updates on The Brave and the Bold have been scarce, leading to concerns about its status. While Gunn insists the project hasn’t been cancelled, a long delay can sometimes be as damaging as cancellation. However, Gunn seems genuinely committed to making the film happen, so fans shouldn’t panic just yet.
The documentary Adventures in Making Superman offers a glimpse into James Gunn’s creative process for making a superhero film. It touches on the discussion about whether Superman should wear his signature red trunks on the outside of his costume. Gunn was initially unsure, but ultimately decided to include them, reasoning that Superman is meant to be a hopeful and inviting figure, unlike Batman. Gunn elaborates, “If I were making a Batman movie, I’d focus on that too. Batman is intimidating—he deliberately wears a frightening costume to scare people.”
No Matter Who Plays Him, Batman Is in Good Hands
Just a few lines of dialogue show that James Gunn understands Batman. While Batman’s fight for justice is admirable, he relies heavily on fear, which has its limits. This might be why Gunn is introducing Damian Wayne into the story. Raised by Ra’s al Ghul, Damian is intensely eager to fight and filled with more anger than any other Robin (except Jason Todd). With a young, easily influenced boy around, Batman can’t keep operating as he always has. The DC Universe will probably force Batman to confront his own flaws and evolve as a character and a hero.
I’m honestly amazed by the kind of actor James Gunn is looking for as Batman. It’s such a difficult role to fill, even someone as talented and physically imposing as Alan Ritchson wouldn’t quite fit the bill. That really shows how specific Gunn’s vision is! We might be waiting a while to see who he casts, but I have a feeling this Batman is going to be something truly special – a real peak for the character.
