James Gunn Reveals Peacemaker’s True ‘Arch-Enemy’

As James Gunn shared, the most recent episode of Peacemaker Season 2 has unveiled the show’s main hero’s ‘greatest enemy.’ John Cena’s character, known for his shiny head, has faced powerful opponents throughout his time on screen, including the frightening Starro, and he even stopped an alien invasion last season while working on Project Butterfly. However, he hasn’t yet encountered a truly persistent and recurring villain-that is, until now.

While talking about Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 7, James Gunn – who created the series and now leads DC Studios – hinted that viewers might have just been introduced to Peacemaker’s biggest enemy. This enemy could be the alternate version of his brother, Kieth, who appears as the armored hero Captain Triumph from Earth X.

On Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, James Gunn discussed David Denman’s character, Captain Triumph, calling the entire season his “origin story.” He expressed that Captain Triumph is “a strange choice for Peacemaker’s main enemy.”

You know, thinking about it, I really see this whole season as the story of how Captain Triumph *became* a super-villain. A truly awful, white supremacist super-villain, honestly. And that look in his eyes at the end… it’s chilling. It’s just such a strange choice for an arch-enemy, isn’t it? Your brother, but from another dimension, and he’s furious at *you* because of your own past actions… because you took your own life. It’s a really messed up dynamic, and it’s fascinating to watch.

This is the first evidence suggesting that, within the DCU, James Gunn views Captain Triumph as the main antagonist for Peacemaker, and it may also indicate plans for the character to appear in future projects beyond the current second season of the show.

The next-to-last episode of Peacemaker Season 2 ended with Denman’s alternate-Earth hero being seriously injured in a fight with the 11th Street Kids. He was left bleeding in his father’s trophy room, while Peacemaker and his team managed a risky return to their own world.

However, viewers did get a final glimpse of Captain Triumph being taken away by medics, which confirmed he’s still alive and potentially seeking revenge.

Peacemaker Season 2 concludes with its final episode becoming available on HBO Max on Thursday, October 9th at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. The latest season of the popular DC series centers around John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith, as he discovers a seemingly perfect situation where everything he’s ever wanted has happened.

John Cena returns to star in the James Gunn-created series, joined by Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Tim Meadows, and Danielle Brooks, completing this team of characters with extraordinary abilities.

Will Captain Triumph and Peacemaker Ever Square Off in the DCU?

As a film enthusiast, I was really struck by how James Gunn and the Peacemaker team handled Captain Triumph’s last scenes in the seventh episode of Season 2. It was a particularly memorable sequence.

Following the attack by Eagley and the 11th Street Kids, many viewers likely expected David Denman’s character to disappear completely, particularly after Peacemaker and his team shut down the dimensional portal and left the prejudiced world of Earth X. It wouldn’t have been shocking if he was never mentioned again.

However, things don’t seem to be heading that way, judging by the final scene of him being taken away by ambulance – clearly still alive – and also considering Gunn’s recent remarks about his arch-enemy.

This suggests that Captain Triumph will return in some capacity at some point in the future.

Now that the portal to Earth-X is closed – at least for the time being – it doesn’t seem likely the character will reappear in the season finale. This leaves either a potential Peacemaker Season 3 or a completely different DCU project as possibilities.

So far, Gunn hasn’t said one way or the other if there will be another season of his popular show. However, if it *does* continue, Captain Triumph will almost certainly play a role, likely as part of a story involving travel across different universes to get revenge.
