James Gunn Reveals Promising Update on One of the First-Announced DCU Movies Everyone Thought Was Already Cancelled

Many of us believed the DC Universe project was scrapped, but recent statements from James Gunn hint at a promising future for a rather unusual group of heroes. In late 2022, celebrated director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran began leading the newly formed DC Studios, immediately starting to plan a revamp of the DC film and television universe. Gunn revealed ten films and shows for the DCU in January 2023, and one of those projects has been quiet for nearly three years – until now, it seems.

James Gunn recently told Deadline that development on The Authority is progressing. When asked if the project-initially planned as a DCU movie-might become a series, Gunn responded, “Who knows?” He also mentioned he’s likely to prioritize films featuring well-known characters, as it’s more challenging to draw audiences to theaters for lesser-known properties. Although not a firm confirmation, this indicates positive momentum for The Authority within the DCU.

How Will The Authority Fit Into The DCU?

The Authority was a surprisingly interesting part of James Gunn’s 2023 announcement about the first chapter of the DCU, called Gods and Monsters. Originally published under the WildStorm label, the team first appeared in DC Comics with The Authority #1 in 1999. They were introduced as a superhero group largely made up of characters who used to be in the less successful Stormwatch team. The initial team, assembled by Jenny Sparks of Stormwatch, featured Apollo, Midnighter (originally Lucas Trent), Doctor (Jeroen Thornedike), Jack Hawksmoor, Swift (Shen Li-Min), and Engineer (Angela Spica) – who had previously appeared in Superman.

María Gabriela de Faría played Angela Spica, Lex Luthor’s (Nicholas Hoult) tech-powered assistant, in Superman. Her role sets up the introduction of the Authority in the DC Universe, as she’s a key member of the team in the comics. The Authority often clashes with Superman because they are antiheroes willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will reprise their roles as Superman and Lex Luthor in Man of Tomorrow, which might explore the Engineer’s character even more.

I’m really excited about what James Gunn has been saying! It sounds like The Authority might be heading to HBO Max as a series instead of a movie. Honestly, I think that’s a great move, because while they’re awesome, the team isn’t as instantly recognizable as heroes like Superman, Supergirl, Swamp Thing, and Batman. A TV show would give them the time they deserve to be fleshed out – kind of like what they’re doing with the Creature Commandos – and it could really build them up for a big screen appearance later on in the DCU. We know there are DCU projects planned for 2026 and 2027, but it’s still a mystery when we’ll actually get to see The Authority debut. I’m hoping it’s sooner rather than later!
