In James Gunn‘s take on Superman, the movie raked in more than $220 million during its debut weekend, suggesting a promising future. One of the film’s standout aspects is the role of Superman’s dog, Krypto, and here, we delve into what inspired director James Gunn to incorporate him into the storyline?
Gunn clarified, “The character in question is usually playful, hailing from DC Comics. I’ve always admired him. For me, the start of the movie marked the commencement of his story. The inclusion of Krypto aiding him at the film’s outset added a fresh twist to this Superman film. It wasn’t like the Donner or Snyder versions of Superman. Instead, it presents a new take on Superman, featuring a flying superdog and eyes that emit beams, along with other superheroes. This world has been inhabited by metahumans for years, and though we meet Superman before he’s achieved his full potential, he is still the greatest among them.
In my review as a movie aficionado, I must share an intriguing backstory about the creation of Krypto. This canine character was ingeniously inspired by my real-life companion, Ozu, a rescue dog named after the renowned Japanese filmmaker Yasujirō Ozu.
At first glance, Ozu was timid and skinny, with one ear standing tall like a beacon that drew me to him. He was wary of me, but he adored my other dog. Unfortunately, this furry friend proved destructive, tearing up our furniture, devouring shoes, and even destroying my laptop!
Despite his mischievous behavior, I found myself pondering what if Ozu possessed superpowers? This thought led to the inception of Krypto, a terrible dog transformed into an iconic character. The movie’s unique twist lies in presenting this awful, maniacal canine as the central figure, adding unexpected depth and intrigue to the storyline.
In essence, Krypto is none other than Ozu, who was scanned, enlarged, and turned white for the big screen. Jolene, a more respectable dog, served as a stand-in, while Ozu remained irreplaceable in his role as the original inspiration behind Krypto.
