James Gunn Teases Batman’s DCU Debut Might Come Sooner Than Expected

James Gunn, one of DC Studios’ co-CEOs, recently hinted that we might see Batman debut in the DC Universe earlier than initially planned, possibly through the film titled “Brave and the Bold“. This upcoming blockbuster will reportedly feature both Batman and his biological son, Damian Wayne (also known as Robin), with the storyline set several years into Batman’s career and involving the existing Bat-Family. Andy Muschietti, director of “The Flash“, is currently linked to directing this project, although no writer has been appointed yet. However, James Gunn confirmed that a script for the movie is being developed.

In its final moments, the DCEU was faltering, but then came “The Batman,” a gripping detective tale that thrived within its own unique Gotham City universe. There was debate about whether this film would serve as the starting point for the DCU’s reboot, but DC Studios has chosen to keep them distinct. As a result, both “The Batman 2” and “Brave and the Bold” are currently in production at the studio, with Robert Pattinson and a new actor portraying separate versions of the Dark Knight character.

James Gunn recently chatted with Josh Horowitz on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast about all things related to DC, and he provided some fresh insights regarding Batman’s upcoming adventures. When inquired if “Brave and the Bold” will be the introduction fans receive when they first encounter Batman in the DC Universe, Gunn was secretive, responding, “I won’t confirm that,” which could hint at his debut happening even sooner.

Now, there’s a fascinating shift in perspective from mid-June, when during an interview on Threads, Gunn was questioned about Batman’s DCU debut potentially happening in Brave and the Bold. His response then was predictable, “Yes.” However, recently it seems that plan has taken a different turn.

It’s unlikely that Batman will make an immediate appearance (perhaps as a significant cameo in “Peacemaker” Season 2), given that the DC Studios co-CEO has already stated “no,” and he hasn’t even started visualizing potential actors for the role yet.

Regardless of how often Gunn asserts otherwise, fans continue to believe that Robert Pattinson’s Batman will eventually join the DC Universe. Yet again, Gunn dismissed these speculations during his interview with Horowitz, subtly hinting affirmation by simply saying “mhm” when asked if the two Batmans were still intended to remain distinct.

It was confirmed that the boss of DC Universe (DCU) is unlikely to release both sequels, The Batman 2 and Brave and the Bold, in the same calendar year. Instead, they plan to space out their premieres for a more balanced schedule.

In the absence of Superman, it’s been revealed that writer Gunn is working on a potential sequel, leading many to assume this could involve a joint mission between Superman and Batman.

According to Gunn, Gunn mentioned that David Corenswet’s character in the upcoming DCU movie will be significantly important, but clarified that it won’t be a rematch between Batman and Superman or a World’s Finest team-up. Instead, he suggested otherwise by shaking his head at those ideas.

Batman’s DCU Future Just Got More Confusing

In a surprising turn of events, DC Studios is set to introduce one of Batman’s villains, Clayface, next October, marking the first R-rated film in the DC Universe. There have been rumors that the next iteration of Batman might make an appearance in Clayface, which could explain James Gunn’s recent hint about his presence before The Brave and the Bold.

It appears that Nexus Point News has disputed these claims in a recent exclusive piece, suggesting that Clayface, as of now, may not include any well-known DC characters and instead concentrate on original figures.

It appears that DC Studios is primarily working on “The Batman 2” at the moment, as Matt Reeves has just submitted the script for it. James Gunn hinted that a script for “Brave and the Bold” might be completed within the next few months.

It’s unlikely that significant progress will be made on “Brave and the Bold” until “The Batman 2” begins filming next year, which is expected to premiere in October 2027. This delay is due to the focus being placed on the sequel of the Crime Saga, which has been under development for three years.

From a die-hard cinema enthusiast’s perspective, given the uncertainty about the release of “Brave and the Bold” on the big screen prior to 2028/29, it seems James Gunn might be exploring alternatives to introduce Batman into the DC Universe earlier than that, should the current plan for his debut in this film not materialize.
