As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to say, are you ready to dive into the DC Universe? James Gunn has served fans two powerful blows with the releases of “Creature Commandos” and “Superman,” marking the beginning of this new DC Universe that Gunn is leading alongside producer Peter Safran. Next up from DC Studios is season 2 of “Peacemaker,” Gunn’s successful spinoff series starring John Cena, who made a surprise appearance in “Superman” sporting the chrome dome helmet for the first time since 2022.
Over the past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, Gunn announced the August 21 comeback of the show on HBO Max. Accompanied by a costume-wearing Cena, he used Hall H to unveil the upcoming season with a panel featuring a big-name cast, an interactive themed setup, and live concerts by Steel Panther and Foxy Shazam as part of “Peacefest.
As a movie critic, I must say that when James Gunn shared updates on the DC Universe slate with TikTok sensation Straw Hat Goofy, he playfully bypassed John Cena – embodying his Peacemaker character – to enthusiastically discuss virtually every project under the sun, except for the upcoming season of “Peacemaker”.

There’s some fantastic news on the horizon! Next year, we’ll be releasing ‘Supergirl’, and it looks like ‘Lanterns’ will follow shortly after. James Gunn expressed his excitement amidst Peacemaker’s nonchalance. Currently, we’re producing ‘Clayface’, working diligently on ‘The Brave and the Bold’, ‘Wonder Woman’, ‘The Batman 2’ under Matt Reeves, and we’re busy with ‘Sgt. Rock’. We’ve also got some entertaining Krypto shorts for kids in the works,” he shared.
Gunn stated that he’s primarily focused on what matters most regarding DC, which led Peacemaker to exclaim, ‘What the heck, people?!'”

“Gunn mentioned that he’s particularly concerned about the aspects of DC that matter most to him, causing Peacemaker to blurt out, ‘What the flustercluck, folks?!’
One project temporarily put on hold is “The Authority,” initially announced as part of DC Studios’ 2023 lineup. James Gunn confirmed that the planned live-action film, focusing on a global superhero squad known for their strict no-tolerance policy against threats, has been postponed for now.
At that point, Gunn expressed that this project was one of his genuine passions. He’s been putting in a lot of effort on it with the writers, and they’re now piecing together the whole narrative. This is a significant film, he mentioned. Gunn added that The Authority, originally from the WildStorm imprint, would be integrated into the DC Universe – with María Gabriela de Faría’s character Angela Spica/the Engineer being the first to appear in ‘Superman’.
He went on to say, “The Authority represents a unique take on the superhero genre. They’re not your typical heroes; they believe the world is irreparably flawed and feel compelled to take matters into their own hands, regardless of who gets hurt or what rules they break along the way. Their methods may be questionable, but they aim to create a better world. We’ll follow them on this complex journey. In our DC Universe, there are characters whose morality is ambiguous, and these are certainly among them.
In February, Gunn disclosed that the production of The Authority, initially announced in 2023, has faced more difficulties compared to other projects. He stated it hasn’t been a major focus. More recently, Gunn has been writing a new script for a feature film, which in some way ties back to his Superman movie but isn’t a direct sequel. This could potentially be an adaptation of Grant Morrison’s four-issue series, Superman and the Authority, where Superman assembles Manchester Black and a team of anti-heroes, such as Apollo and Midnighter, to protect the world.
The second season of “Peacemaker,” featuring returning stars John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick, along with fresh faces Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows, will make its debut on HBO Max starting August 21.
