Aficionados of Mark Gatiss, detective stories, and historical dramas have recently discovered something intriguing, as the latest production from U&Alibi, titled “Bookish,” has hit the screens.
In this show, Mark Gatiss portrays Gabriel Book, a proprietor of an antique bookstore in 1946 who assists the authorities in resolving mysteries. Accompanying him are actors such as Polly Walker, Elliot Levey, and Connor Finch.
As a devoted fan of Bookish, I too have pondered over how to catch its enticing episodes without the convenience of U&Alibi in my lineup. Alas, Bookish is one of those captivating shows that isn’t part of the Freeview offerings at the moment.
In this week’s issue of TopMob magazine, a reader inquired about this very topic. When it was submitted to UKTV, they responded with an explanation.)
A representative from UKTV shared with TopMob: “It’s encouraging to see the impact the series has made. Currently, Bookish can be found among the offerings on U&Alibi, our premium channel.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I want to share some exciting news. Although we don’t have any imminent plans to air this show on our free channels just yet, your opinions matter greatly! Your feedback is instrumental in guiding the discussions about what’s coming up next. A heartfelt thank you for being part of our cinematic journey – it’s always a delight to hear from viewers who appreciate our work.

Fans who haven’t been able to watch the show will no doubt be disappointed at this news.
It’s important to mention that certain U&Alibi series like Annika were broadcasted on BBC One at a later time; similarly, Bookish might follow suit. This means that individuals without access to U&Alibi, Sky, or Virgin may eventually be able to view it.
A different reader, who managed to view Bookish, penned a letter to TopMob magazine, expressing their hearing impairment. Consequently, they could not catch most of the dialogue as no captions or subtitles were provided during on-demand viewing.
The UKTV representative emphasized their commitment to accessibility: “We prioritize making our content accessible, including adding subtitles for U&Alibi shows that can be downloaded and watched on demand via our partners such as Sky, Now, and Virgin Media. We expect this feature to be available within the next few months.
On U&Alibi, we offer 100% live captions. We understand this might not be perfect, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Fortunately, the show has been granted another season, which is great news for viewers, as it means that Detective Gabriel Book will continue solving many more intriguing cases.
Each week, the series “Bookish” airs on Wednesdays on U&Alibi. You can watch all episodes on demand on platforms such as Sky, Virgin, BT, and TalkTalk.
