Jamie McPhee is figuring out her new normal.
Just days after her husband, James Ransone, tragically took his own life on December 19th at 46 years old, Jamie has spoken about coping with the loss and raising their two young children, Jack, 6, and Violet, 4.
She shared on Instagram on December 23rd that her kids wanted ice cream after their visit to the park, so she took them to the mall. Violet chose a pink backpack, and Jack insisted they stop at the Lego store, where he made her buy and help him build something.
Jamie realized this was the first time anyone had actually recognized her. She overheard someone in the food court suggesting they ask her for something.
Although the mother of two appreciated that people didn’t bring up her son’s death, the experience reminded her that you can’t always tell what others are privately struggling with.
She reflected on times when they appeared happy and normal, laughing and smiling. She wondered how they managed it, explaining it wasn’t because they weren’t still grieving – they were. But it was because her two wonderful children constantly reminded her of the love and joy that remained, even in difficult times.
Jamie lovingly referred to her late husband as “PJ.” She shared a touching message explaining that while his death was devastating, it also brought comfort to many through the wonderful stories friends and family have shared about his life.
She went on to say that she’s likely heard of only a fraction of the stories out there – stories about people reconnecting, friendships mending after long periods of no contact, and difficult truths finally being shared. It seems like bringing old hurts to light is helping people heal and find relief.

Jamie remembered that in the weeks before you passed away, after you’d spent months sharing all your regrets – every mistake and hurtful thing you felt you’d done – you suddenly cried and said, ‘The most messed up thing is, I actually love everyone.’ Jamie replied, ‘Well, it turns out that despite everything, everyone loves you too.’
Following a post honoring the late actor from It Chapter Two, she shared a touching message on December 21st. Alongside a photo of them together, she wrote on Instagram, “I’ve told you I loved you a thousand times, and I know I’ll love you again. You said I needed to be more like you, and you needed to be more like me—and you were absolutely right.”
“Thank you for giving me the greatest gifts—you, Jack and Violet,” she added. “We are forever.”
