Back to the Future fans are mourning a treasured cast member.
James Tolkan, best known for playing Gerard Strickland in the films, passed away on March 26th, according to his representative. He was 94 years old.
It’s with a heavy heart that I confirm the news about James. His representative, John Alcantar, shared with me that he was a truly cherished professional and lived a rich, fulfilling life. We’re all sending our condolences and remembering him fondly.
The news of actor Tolkan’s death has been confirmed following an announcement on the official franchise website. The cause of death was not revealed.
I’ve been a fan of Michael Tolkan for years! While he had an amazing career on stage for over 25 years, he’s probably best known for playing the stern Vice Principal Strickland in Back to the Future. I loved watching him go toe-to-toe with Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Lea Thompson in the first two movies, and it was fantastic to see him return for the third film – playing the grandfather of the same character! It really showed his range as an actor.
After hearing of his death, Fox paid tribute to his costar’s life.
I was so saddened to hear about the passing of James Tolkan. He was truly unforgettable, and I immediately thought of his famous line – he was definitely not a slacker! I feel lucky to have known him, worked alongside him as an actor, and even had the chance to direct him on Tales from the Crypt. It was a real honor.
Fox added, “I’ll miss you pal.”

Beyond his work on the beloved cult classic series, Tolkan was also remembered for playing Commander Tom Jardian in Tony Scott’s 1986 film Top Gun. He starred alongside Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Meg Ryan, and other famous actors. He is survived by his wife, Parmelee.
Oh my gosh, it was just electric on set! Everyone, and I mean everyone, just knew this movie was going to be huge, and it totally was! I remember Tolkan talking about it once, and he said the director, Tony Scott, had him puffing on this massive cigar for so long that he actually turned green on camera! Can you believe it? He said he bounced back, thankfully, but it’s just the best story and really shows how wild and fun making this film was. I’ve watched every interview with everyone involved a million times, and it still gives me chills!
Before he passed away, the actor from WarGames talked about how his movies continue to be remembered and enjoyed.

Tolkan shared in a 2019 interview at New Jersey Horror Con & Film Festival how incredible it is that people are still watching and enjoying movies he made over 30 years ago, and continue to show their enthusiasm for them.
Despite appearing in many famous Hollywood movies, the actor, known for Love and Death, says he’s particularly proud of his background in theater, especially being part of the original cast of Glengarry Glen Ross.
He said he likes making movies, even though it’s not his main strength. He feels very fortunate to have had the opportunities he’s been given.
