Nintendo is the clear leader in Japan’s video game market, both for consoles and game sales. This is highlighted by the fact that their new game, Ghost of Yotei, was one of only three titles not on the original or updated Switch to rank among the country’s 30 best-selling games last week.
According to Famitsu, physical sales of the PlayStation 5 game have almost reached 185,000 copies in Japan. Most of these sales happened when the game first launched, making it the best-selling game in Japan during its initial week with 120,000 units sold. (This number doesn’t include digital downloads.)
Here’s how its Japanese sales have looked since then:
- 29th Sep — 5th Oct
- 120,196 sales
- 6th Oct — 12th Oct
- 26,776 sales
- 13th Oct — 19th Oct
- 18,930 sales
- 20th Oct — 26th Oct
- 6,984 sales
- 27th Oct — 2nd Nov
- 4,187 sales
- 3rd Nov — 9th Nov
- 3,203 sales
- 10th Nov — 16th Nov
- 2,368 sales
- 17th Nov — 23rd Nov
- 1,891 sales
Last week, Ghost of Yotei ranked 26th in Japan’s top 30 best-selling games, according to Famitsu data. Since Famitsu only tracks the top 30, we might stop receiving weekly sales updates in a few weeks if the game drops out of the rankings.
Sony recently announced that PlayStation 5 is selling at a similar rate to the game Ghost of Tsushima. As of November 2nd, they’ve sold 3.3 million units worldwide. Current data also shows it’s the 10th best-selling game in the US so far this year.
Our review of Ghost of Yotei for the PS5 gave it a 9 out of 10, and we declared it Sucker Punch’s greatest game yet. We praised how much freedom the game gives players to customize their experience, along with its enhanced combat, compelling story, and excellent use of the PS5’s capabilities. Sucker Punch truly surpassed themselves with this exceptional sequel.
