Beware – this article contains spoilers for the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie (2026)! After years of searching, Jared Leto may have finally found a truly successful blockbuster franchise role. Despite taking chances with his acting, consistent mainstream success has eluded the Oscar winner and musician. But it appears the new Masters of the Universe, directed by Travis Knight, could be the project that changes everything.
Jared Leto has starred in several high-profile films, but his career has been a mixed bag. He often takes on roles in promising projects, but many of those films haven’t performed well in theaters, and sometimes his controversial acting choices have been a contributing factor.
After a decade of disappointing attempts, the new Masters of the Universe movie is a surprisingly welcome change. No matter how well it does at the box office, Jared Leto seems to have truly succeeded with his portrayal of Skeletor, a significant improvement over his previous work in similar franchise films.
For 10 Years, Jared Leto Has Struggled With Big Blockbuster Roles
Jared Leto started appearing in big-budget action movies with 2016’s Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer. His portrayal of the Joker, a new take on the character within the DC Extended Universe created by Zack Snyder, quickly became one of the most debated performances ever seen in a comic book movie.
Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker received a mixed reaction. While some praised his take on the character and the on-screen chemistry he shared with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, others disliked his modern look – including his tattoos and hairstyle, which some felt was too trendy. The stories about Leto’s unusual preparation for the role also caused controversy. Even fans of his performance were disappointed by how little he actually appeared in the film, considering how much the movie focused on his character in its promotion.
Jared Leto received a more positive response for his role in the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049, although opinions on the character were still somewhat divided. Despite receiving strong reviews from critics, the movie wasn’t a big financial success.
2022’s Morbius was likely the low point of Jared Leto’s involvement with these films. The movie, a Spider-Man spin-off where Leto played Doctor Michael Morbius, received harsh criticism for its confusing plot, weak special effects, and uninspired acting. It also became a popular subject of online jokes and memes. Beyond being a box office failure, the film experienced a second flop when Sony mistakenly believed online buzz meant people actually wanted to see it again, leading to a widely criticized re-release.
Though it wasn’t a standout performance, Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Hatbox Ghost in the 2023 film Haunted Mansion was a positive move. As the main villain, Leto delivered a strong performance, effectively blending makeup and visual effects to create a suitably creepy character for the family-friendly movie inspired by the Disney theme park ride.
Most recently, Jared Leto played the main character in the 2025 film Tron: Ares. However, the movie didn’t generate much excitement and received mostly lukewarm reviews. Many critics found Leto’s performance to be uninspired, even considering his character was a computer program.
Besides the 2016 film Suicide Squad, most big-budget franchise movies haven’t been huge hits at the box office, no matter what critics said. And even when Jared Leto wasn’t the reason for a film’s failure—though he has been blamed at times—he’s often been in movies that audiences just didn’t connect with…until recently.
With Masters of the Universe, Jared Leto Provides A Peak Performance As Skeletor
It’s still unclear how well Masters of the Universe will do in theaters overall, but Jared Leto’s portrayal of Skeletor is already being hailed as a highlight of the film.
The new live-action film captures Lord Skeletor’s classic look with impressive costumes and special effects, particularly his skull and glowing red eyes. Like the original 80s cartoon villain, Skeletor, as played by Leto, is powerfully dramatic, arrogant, scary, and surprisingly funny – a true scene-stealer.
Jared Leto was given a lot of creative freedom with his portrayal of Skeletor in this new movie, and his chilling voice is a major highlight. The film cleverly acknowledges Skeletor’s popularity as an internet meme without overdoing it, and Leto’s performance is arguably the strongest part of the new Masters of the Universe movie.
Honestly, I think Jared Leto nailed Skeletor. He really got what makes that character tick. And you know what? I’d say this role is already the one most people will remember him for – it’s definitely his biggest and best part so far.
Masters of the Universe is now playing in theaters from Mattel Studios and Amazon MGM Studios.
