Throughout its 15-season span, the TV show “Supernatural” featured several contentious storylines, but there’s one specific plot that Jared Padalecki regrets and would like to revisit if given the chance. Despite his brother, Jensen Ackles’ character Dean Winchester being known as a womanizer on “Supernatural”, Jared Padalecki’s Sam Winchester had more significant romantic relationships throughout the entire series on The CW. One of these relationships is often seen as a misstep, and even Padalecki concurs, as he admitted during a panel at FAN EXPO Boston in August (as reported by Screen Rant).
When asked about whether Sam Winchester would change any decisions if given another chance five years since the end of Supernatural, Jensen Ackles replied with a hint of uncertainty. “I believe,” he said, “that Sam wouldn’t have pursued a romantic relationship, especially not one with someone like Amelia Richardson, after his brother… over a dog.” During season 7, Sam had been in a relationship with Liane Balaban’s character, Amelia Richardson, while Dean was stuck in Purgatory following the defeat of the Leviathans. Amelia was a veterinarian from Kermit, Texas, whom Sam met after hitting a dog and taking it to her clinic. Their romance came to an end when Amelia’s husband, Don, returned from Afghanistan.

The fact that Sam decided not to search for Dean when he was sent to Purgatory, instead choosing to settle down with Amelia and seemingly move on swiftly, has been a contentious point since ‘Supernatural’ season 8. While the Winchesters had vowed not to make any demon deals or spend their lives trying to resurrect each other, Sam did not seem to entertain this possibility after Dean defeated Dick Roman (James Patrick Stuart). A significant portion of the fan base found this decision difficult to accept, and it appears that Padalecki shares these sentiments.
In the character of Amelia and as a potential love interest for Sam, there was nothing fundamentally flawed. In fact, her storyline, where her husband returned, offered a relatable, human subplot for Sam – a rarity in ‘Supernatural’ since it didn’t involve supernatural entities. However, the issue with this plot wasn’t about Amelia or the story itself; it was about the timing. It seemed implausible that Sam would so quickly abandon his search for Dean and settle down after his disappearance, considering this mirrored Dean’s relationship with Lisa Braeden (played by Cindy Sampson) just two seasons earlier.
Among many relationships Sam Winchester had, Amelia stood out as one of the most notable. He also had romantic connections with Amy Pond (Jewel Straite), deaf hunter Eileen Leahy (Shoshannah Stern), his season 1 girlfriend Jessica Moore (Adrianne Palicki), Velma Dinkley from Scooby-Doo (Kate Micucci), and others. Interestingly, Jared Padalecki, who portrayed Sam, married Genevieve Cortese in real life, while the character of Sam Winchester ended up with a woman – some speculate she might be Eileen – who later became his wife and mother of his child, Dean. It was only after Amelia had been forgotten that Sam found his happy ending.
