Prime Video, like most streaming services, added a bunch of new movies in January. This included popular films like the two 21 Jump Street movies, both Ted films, and the first four Mission: Impossible installments. Even last summer’s horror hit, Final Destination: Bloodlines, is now available. However, even with all these additions – including fairly recent releases – it’s always hard to guess which movies will become the most popular.
Take Jason Statham, known for his action roles, for example. One of his movies has unexpectedly become a hit on Prime Video, and it’s not one of his recent films made for Amazon MGM like A Working Man or The Beekeeper (which could both become ongoing series). Instead, it’s Meg 2: The Trench, the sequel where he battles another giant shark. This sudden popularity might signal to the filmmakers that they should start planning Meg 3 quickly.
Jason Statham’s Meg 2: The Trench Takes Over Prime Video

Following the 2018 hit The Meg, Meg 2: The Trench (released in 2023) continues the story of scientists facing off against a massive shark in stunning locations. Based on Steve Alten’s novels, the first film spent years in development before becoming a box office success, earning over $500 million worldwide and paving the way for a sequel. Meg 2: The Trench also drew from Alten’s work and proved successful, earning over $398 million globally.
It’s surprising to see Meg 2 become one of the most-watched movies on Prime Video, especially since there haven’t been any recent events or anniversaries to drive interest. The film has simply climbed into the Top 10 based on viewers’ choices. Flix Patrol reports it’s currently #7 in the U.S., steadily gaining popularity over the last five days. Interestingly, there’s no clear reason why Meg 2 is suddenly trending, as it was released on Prime Video on January 1st alongside many other popular films. This begs the question: when will The Meg 3 be released?
Beyond the enduring appeal of shark and monster movies, the Meg franchise has plenty of source material for future installments. The original 1997 novel by Steve Alten launched a series of books with sequels like “Primal Waters” and “Hell’s Aquarium.” A movie poster featuring Jason Statham with one of those titles would likely be a streaming hit.
There’s currently no confirmation about a third Meg movie, but the first two films did well financially and attracted a global audience – something many franchises struggle with these days. A potential obstacle is that Meg 2 was a joint production between American and Chinese companies, including China Film Co., Ltd. and Alibaba Pictures. Recent political tensions might make that kind of collaboration more difficult, but a third film still seems likely. Until then, Meg 2 is available to stream on Prime Video.
