The sci-fi movie Klara and the Sun, based on the popular 2021 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, is now scheduled for release in 2026. Jenna Ortega will play Klara, the main robot character. The film was originally announced in 2020, but its release has been postponed multiple times.
Taika Waititi recently told Screen Daily that his film Klara and the Sun is finished being edited (referred to as ‘picture locked’) and is scheduled for release in 2026. He shared this news while promoting his new film, Fing!, at the Sundance Film Festival. You can find his complete statement below.
The movie Klara and the Sun is scheduled to be released this year. We’re currently discussing release plans with Sony, including potential festival showings and other launch details.
Directed by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi (known for Jojo Rabbit and Thor), and written by Emmy winner Dahvi Waller (Mad Men), Klara and the Sun is based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro. The film stars Jenna Ortega as Klara, a robot designed to combat loneliness, and follows her efforts to help a family struggling with a child’s illness.
The film stars Jenna Ortega as Klara, alongside Amy Adams, a six-time Oscar nominee, playing Josie’s mother. Mia Tharia stars as Josie, with Simon Baker, an Emmy nominee known for The Mentalist, as her father. The cast also includes Natasha Lyonne, who has received five Emmy nominations, as well as Steve Buscemi, Harry Greenwood, and Aran Murphy.
The movie version of Klara and the Sun was initially announced in 2020, with Sony Pictures securing the rights to Kazuo Ishiguro’s book even before it was published. Although filming took place in early 2024 and wrapped up quickly, the release was delayed because the editing process took almost a year and a half.
Now, Klara and the Sun is finally set for a release sometime in 2026.
