Jennifer Hudson got the Christmas gift of her dreams.
The actress from Dreamgirls was deeply moved when her 16-year-old son, David Jr., surprised her with a recording of his own version of one of her songs. It’s clear musical talent is in their genes, as David Jr. shares this gift with his mother, whom he shares with his father, David Otunga.
In a video shared on Instagram on December 26th, the teenager explained to his mom that he hadn’t wanted to sing with her – he was actually working on a surprise for her, and he wanted to reveal it through the video.
When the camera turned to Jennifer, the award-winning performer began to cry as she listened to David sing his version of “Find the Love,” a song from her 2024 holiday album, The Gift of Love. Her boyfriend, Common, who she publicly confirmed she was dating in January, was visibly touched by the performance, nodding his head to the music.
As the video showed David in a recording studio, he sang, ‘I go with the flow, through good times and bad, and I’ve been hoping and praying.’ He continued, ‘This year, my dear, we’re going to find love.’
Jennifer Hudson seemed genuinely surprised and speechless after watching her son perform.
She said, wiping her face with tissues, “You’ve really gone above and beyond. I’m just speechless.”

Jennifer described how touched she was by David’s gift in the caption accompanying the video.
She expressed feeling deeply loved, sharing that a sweet gesture – ‘Out of the mouths of babes,’ as she put it – touched her heart in a way only someone special could. She described it as a wonderful and unexpected gift of love.
As many of you know, David’s been showing off his amazing voice for a while now! It wasn’t just a spontaneous moment, actually. Last month, I had the absolute joy of recording a duet with him – we tackled Daniel Caesar and H.E.R.’s ‘Best Part,’ and it was such a fun, collaborative experience. We were even playfully giving each other singing tips – he’s a natural, and wasn’t afraid to offer me advice, which was adorable!
He playfully predicted her Instagram performance of the R&B ballad would become a meme, jokingly warning her not to sing too loudly.
