Jeremy Allen White Got Candid About Why He Asked Bruce Springsteen For ‘A Little Bit Of Space’ While He Filmed Deliver Me From Nowhere

Jeremy Allen White consistently tackles demanding roles with commitment. He physically transformed for The Iron Claw, enduring a difficult bulk-up process, and deeply explored the complex inner world of Carmy in Season 3 of The Bear. For his upcoming biopic about Bruce Springsteen, Deliver Me From Nowhere, White fully immersed himself in the part – so much so that he even asked Springsteen for some privacy while portraying him.

I knew Jeremy Allen White would deliver a fantastic performance when he was cast as Bruce Springsteen. Austin Butler, who was impressed by White’s work in Deliver Me From Nowhere, spoke with the actor for Interview Magazine about preparing to play the “Born in the USA” singer. White honestly shared that he asked Springsteen for some privacy while filming. He explained:

The first week was definitely nerve-wracking, but Scott was incredibly kind and took things slowly. It wasn’t dramatic at all – unlike some movies where the first day on the job involves huge conflicts or emotional breakdowns. I didn’t experience anything like that, and I think that was intentional. I spoke with Bruce at the end of the week and just asked for a little time to get comfortable and find my rhythm.

It must have been a huge relief for the actor from The Bear to ease into filming, rather than immediately tackling difficult scenes – it’s good to test the waters before diving in. With Bruce Springsteen actually on set for the 2025 film, it makes sense that the actor wanted some time to get comfortable with the character privately.

I can only imagine how much pressure it must be to play a real person, especially while someone like them is watching! It’s totally understandable to need a little room to work your magic. Thankfully, Bruce Springsteen – The Boss himself – was really cool about it and gave the actor playing him the space he needed, which the actor joked about. It was awesome to hear he was so understanding!

He said he understood and that it wasn’t an issue. He was away for about two days, and when he returned, he asked how things had been while he was gone.

Bruce Springsteen handled Jack White’s need for privacy with admirable consideration. Springsteen understood White’s perspective and offered to stay away during emotionally sensitive scenes, allowing the actor to fully immerse himself in his work. This demonstrated Springsteen’s trust in White’s abilities and artistic process.

Jeremy Allen White shared that Bruce Springsteen was a fantastic support during filming, always making time to offer help or encouragement. Springsteen even sent White texts late at night highlighting what he’d done well, which White found incredibly reassuring and helped him relax. Having that kind of positive feedback made tackling the difficult role much easier.

Jeremy Allen White put in a lot of effort to accurately capture Bruce Springsteen’s voice and personality. Asking Springsteen for some distance allowed White to create a believable performance, and Springsteen himself acknowledged White’s successful ‘interpretation.’ It just goes to show an actor sometimes needs to fully embody a role, even if it means stepping outside of direct collaboration.

You can see the Bruce Springsteen biopic, Deliver Me From Nowhere, in theaters on October 24th.
