John Boyega has been open about his disappointment with how his character, Finn (originally FN-2187), was handled in the Star Wars sequel films. Introduced in The Force Awakens as a key member of the hero group, Finn showed potential to be force-sensitive, suggesting a strong connection to the Force and a meaningful relationship with Rey. However, this storyline was never developed, leaving both Boyega and many fans feeling let down by the unfulfilled possibilities.
John Boyega recently discussed the possibility of returning as Finn in future Star Wars projects, acknowledging the character’s journey so far. During a panel at MEGACON Orlando, an audience member suggested contacting Dave Filoni about it, and Boyega revealed he’s already been in touch with him.
What A Future for Finn Could Look Like

John Boyega has often talked about his experiences with the Star Wars franchise, and how it historically lacked diversity. He’s previously stated that the series felt very white and exclusive, and that while he was accepted in supporting roles, there was pushback when he played a leading character. His recent willingness to consider returning to Star Wars is encouraging, suggesting a potentially more inclusive future for his character, Finn, and the franchise as a whole.
I always connected with Finn’s story in the sequel films. It was so compelling to see him wrestle with the fact that he’d been fighting for the wrong side his whole life. In The Force Awakens, he really stood up against everything he’d known, and it hinted that he might even have a connection to the Force. Then, in The Last Jedi, he started to explore the galaxy and understand what he was now fighting for. It felt like he was really growing. But honestly, I was so disappointed with The Rise of Skywalker. It just threw everything away. All the development Finn had gone through seemed to vanish, and his future felt totally uncertain compared to the other characters. It was a real letdown.
