As a huge fan of The Mummy, I’ve been really excited to hear the buzz about a possible reboot! Brendan Fraser recently hinted that things are looking good and that we might get to see him return as Rick O’Connell – and honestly, that would be amazing. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it actually happens!
As a huge fan of the series, I was thrilled to hear John Hannah hint at a possible return! He played Jonathan Carnahan way back when, and he recently said coming back for another adventure ‘would be fun’ – even though it’s been 27 years since we last saw him in the role. It’s exciting to think about!
So, I asked him directly about all the buzz surrounding a possible return, and he was pretty candid. He said nothing’s confirmed officially, but he’s definitely seen the rumors floating around – just like the rest of us! And honestly? He seemed really enthusiastic about the idea, saying it would be a blast to work with the old team again. Sounds like he’s open to it, at least!
He admitted he didn’t understand how the show’s creators would manage to reunite all the characters, but acknowledged he wasn’t a writer and trusted them to figure it out.

He also shared that he’d talked with Fraser last year, when the idea of a reboot first came up, and at the time, things seemed promising.
According to Fraser, the plan was to reunite the original actors, and he specifically mentioned wanting to bring Brendan and Rachel Weisz back together. Reports indicate Rachel was enthusiastic about returning.
She was happy to do it, especially considering she’d built a successful career for herself as a producer and actor, even earning an Oscar nomination.
He initially hesitated when offered the role in The Mummy, wondering if it was a worthwhile project for a serious actor. However, he realized it could be a fun, family-friendly movie, and he’s open to participating if asked. He admitted he doesn’t know what the future holds and is just as in the dark as everyone else about any potential plans, based on what he’s heard.
Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah appeared in all three ‘The Mummy’ movies, starting with the original in 1999 and ending with ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’ in 2008. However, reports suggest that any future films won’t include the events of the third movie.
In 2017, a new version of the film starring Tom Cruise as Sergeant Nick Morton was released with plans for a larger connected movie universe. However, those plans were dropped after the film didn’t perform well in theaters and received mostly negative reviews.
Later this year, a new take on The Mummy is coming to theaters. It’s directed by Lee Cronin, who recently directed Evil Dead Rise.
Interestingly, this movie is made by Warner Bros., not Universal, which produced all the earlier films in the series.
