Warning: Contains spoilers for The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” movie. With acting heavyweights like Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and Joseph Quinn taking on major roles, it’s clear that the cast is shaping up to be nothing short of spectacular!
Once upon a time, it wasn’t too far in the past when it appeared as though I, an eager moviegoer, might be graced by the presence of another grand actor on the silver screen – none other than John Malkovich.
In the film, the legendary actor initially agreed to portray the villainous character, Ivan Kragoff alias Red Ghost. He filmed his parts and even made a brief appearance in some early trailers, but eventually, he was removed from the final version of the movie.
In the recently released movie, it’s been verified that Malkovich doesn’t make an appearance. However, there’s a surprising turn of events as his character does show up – though not exactly as we know him, instead appearing in a slightly altered guise for a brief moment.
In the film’s second extra scene after the credits, we witness a nostalgic animated sequence where the Fantastic Four are engaged in combat with some well-known adversaries. Among these opponents, you guessed it – the Red Ghost appears.
While it may not be a pivotal part or significantly impact the storyline, diehard fans who lamented over the character’s absence in the primary movie might appreciate the subtle wink instead.
Previously, director Matt Shakman explained to Variety that there were numerous elements in Malkovich’s case that eventually had to be left out during editing.
He mentioned: “While crafting a world blending ’60s nostalgia with future elements, we needed to introduce numerous villains, establish our four principal characters collectively and individually, introduce the concept of a child, and maintain a balance. Consequently, certain aspects had to be set aside in order to refine the movie for its final edit.
Additionally, he mentioned that leaving out Malkovich was deeply saddening for him, as Malkovich is not only one of his most cherished individuals but also a significant inspiration.
He concluded: “[Malkovich] was brilliant in it, and gave it his all.”
