John Wick’s Future Confirmed 3 Years After Iconic Keanu Reeves’ Hero “Death”

In Hollywood, a popular and financially successful actor can often overcome even a seemingly definitive on-screen death, which is why the ending of John Wick 4 didn’t feel final. Director Chad Stahelski confirmed in 2024 that he and Keanu Reeves were open to continuing the story if a compelling idea emerged. Reeves has already made a brief appearance in the Ballerina spinoff and has indicated his willingness to return, provided the script is right. Now, there’s a more solid update regarding the future of the franchise.

Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, told BusinessInsider that Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski have a compelling idea for a fifth John Wick movie – the condition they set for returning. While he wouldn’t commit to a release date, Fogelson said they’ve “landed on something that they are excited about.” He also confirmed that a Donnie Yen spinoff, From the World of John Wick: Caine, and an animated prequel will come out before John Wick 5, which is now officially in the works.

What to Expect From John Wick 5

Don’t expect John Wick 5 to be just another action-packed battle against the High Table. Director Chad Stahelski told Empire that the next film will be a significant departure from what audiences have seen before, now that the story with the High Table has concluded. He says the previous saga was essentially finished, and any new movie will need a fresh narrative involving John Wick – not a continuation of the old one. With John having finally dealt with his personal grief, Stahelski promises a surprising and unexpected film, saying the trailer alone will leave viewers shocked and eager to see more.

Chad Stahelski previously shared that both the animated prequel and the John Wick: Under the High Table series would directly connect to John Wick 5, but when discussing future plans, Fogelman only mentioned the anime. Stahelski explained to Empire that they hoped to experiment with new ideas and storylines through these projects, using them to develop concepts for the fifth film. While it’s unusual that one of those planned series isn’t being discussed, the strength of John Wick’s character and Keanu Reeves’ performance are enough to keep the franchise successful – something that doesn’t happen often.
