Before movies about musicians’ lives became incredibly popular, Walk the Line stood out as a captivating story of the love between Johnny Cash and June Carter.
The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, tells the story of Johnny Cash’s life, from his upbringing in Arkansas to his success as a country music icon. It depicts his struggles with addiction and relationships, and his passionate love for June Carter, a member of the renowned Carter family. The film was highly praised upon release, earning numerous awards, including four Academy Award nominations and a Best Actress Oscar win for Witherspoon.
More than two decades after the movie came out, the love story of Johnny Cash and June Carter is being revisited with a new touring musical called The Ballad of Johnny and June. This production allows John Carter Cash, their son, to share his thoughts on how the film affected people.
He thought Walk the Line was a beautiful love story with excellent acting. However, he felt the movie couldn’t cover everything about the couple’s life in just two hours, so it didn’t tell the complete story.

The movie ends in 1968 with what seems like a happy ending, but the real story didn’t stop there. So the challenge was figuring out how to continue it respectfully, and how to address the lesser-known, more difficult truths.
Carter Cash explained he felt it was crucial to reveal the full, human side of his parents, beyond just their public image. He shared that after his father’s death, the family threw his wheelchair into a lake, and he wished he’d had more opportunities to show that vulnerable, personal side of them.
He sees this new play as a chance to correct past shortcomings, believing it’s the most complete and accurate version of the story yet.
This musical tells the story of Johnny and June Carter Cash, starting with how their parents met in 1956 and continuing throughout their lives together. It features many of their classic hits, including “Ring of Fire,” “Hey Porter,” “Jackson,” “I’ve Been Everywhere,” and numerous other beloved songs.
The show initially premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse in California and then came to the UK for a national tour, which continues through September. Creator Carter Cash described the journey of bringing the show to life as a lengthy but wonderful experience.
I, along with Des McAnuff and Robert Cary, did several lengthy interviews – often four or five hours each – where they thoroughly explored my life, experiences, how I speak, and my overall personality. I also shared a selection of songs from my parents’ collection that I thought would be a good fit for the project.

I really didn’t want to create just another show with a bunch of songs and people dancing – one that didn’t have a real plot. My goal was to tell a complete story, and making that happen was tricky.
Carter Cash was especially keen on showing the challenges his parents faced with addiction. While he often discussed his own struggles with pills, many people don’t realize June Carter also dealt with similar issues.
You know, hearing Johnny Cash talk about his mother’s struggles with addiction really resonated with me. He shared that when he was concerned, he turned to his own father for guidance and just… talked it through. It’s a simple, powerful image – facing tough family issues and finding solace in a father’s ear. It felt incredibly honest and relatable, a small window into the Cash family dynamic.
I wanted to share the important changes that happened during my father’s recovery in the early 1970s. After he got sober in 1968, our family experienced a really happy time.
We had a life together, but things became particularly difficult between 1982 and 1983 – more challenging than they’d ever been before.
He deliberately faced hardship to demonstrate compassion and show that love could endure even in difficult times.
For Carter Cash, the most important message was demonstrating that love can overcome even the most difficult and painful experiences.
He went on to say it was a wonderful story about his parents, who both lived full, beautiful lives, though sadly they passed away before the age of 75. Despite any challenges, they consistently chose love, and he felt their story deserved to be shared and remembered.
