Johnny Depp & Angelina Jolie’s Forgotten $100M Crime Thriller Returns As Global Streaming Sensation 16 Years Later

This crime thriller stars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie and follows a man who goes to Venice after a split, where he gets involved with an enigmatic woman. Released 16 years ago, the film did well at the box office, earning $278 million globally from a $100 million budget.

As of January 23rd, the show The Tourist is performing very well on HBO Max, reaching the top spot in eight different countries, according to data from FlixPatrol. While it’s not currently available for streaming on HBO Max in the U.S., viewers there can rent or buy it on platforms like Prime Video. The show is currently a top three hit in countries including Mexico, Chile, and Venezuela, among others.

The 2010 film The Tourist is actually a remake of the 2005 French movie with the same title, directed by Anthony Zimmer. While it features a well-known cast including Paul Bettany and Timothy Dalton, critics didn’t love it – it only received a 21% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences rated it slightly higher at 42%, and the film’s success likely came from its thrilling plot and famous actors.

Despite costing $100 million to make, The Tourist was still very profitable. Its release sparked a playful rivalry between Johnny Depp and Ricky Gervais after Gervais joked about the film while hosting the 2011 Golden Globes. Depp later appeared on Gervais’ comedy show, Life’s Too Short, and jokingly addressed the situation with him.

By the time The Tourist came out, Johnny Depp was fresh off his success in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which was Burton’s biggest box office hit yet. Depp’s next project was the animated film Rango. Angelina Jolie was also busy, having just finished Salt and preparing for Kung Fu Panda 2, following the huge success of the first Kung Fu Panda movie in 2008.

Even though the movie industry has changed a lot since then, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie still managed to create a successful film. While The Tourist isn’t considered either of their best works, it’s the type of movie that continues to be popular on streaming services years later.
