A legal thriller originally released in 2025 has become a global hit after finding a new audience on Netflix. The movie joins a growing collection of legal dramas on the streaming service, alongside popular original films like Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile and The Trial of the Chicago 7, both of which are based on true stories.
The Indian legal drama Haq is based on the real-life case of Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum. This case was significant in 1980s India because the Supreme Court ruled that a Muslim woman who was divorced by her husband under Islamic law was entitled to financial support.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie Haq has quickly become a global hit on Netflix. Added to the platform recently, it’s now ranked among the top 10 movies worldwide as of January 23, 2026. Haq has reached the top 10 lists in 15 countries, including achieving the number one spot in Bangladesh.
This Indian film stars Yami Gautam Dhar as Shazia Bano, a woman abandoned by her husband in the 1970s who never received the financial support he promised. After her husband, Abbas (Emraan Hashmi), divorces her through religious practice, she takes the case to court, sparking a discussion about the intersection of religion and the law.
After receiving positive feedback in India when it was released in November 2025, the movie Haq is now gaining popularity globally after becoming available on Netflix. Critics and audiences alike seem to enjoy it, as reflected by its 77% score from critics and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film has sparked controversy because the filmmakers didn’t consult Shah Bano’s daughter, even though she understands the legal issues – specifically, the conflict between Islamic and government law – portrayed in the movie. Additionally, the original court ruling has been weakened over time, which makes the film’s message of empowerment even more debatable.
Despite the issues surrounding it, the movie is performing well on Netflix, particularly in countries near India. It tells a complex and important story about divorce and financial support, and while the controversy likely attracted some viewers, the film’s core message continues to resonate.
