After a quiet period following his highly publicized legal battle with Amber Heard, Johnny Depp is gradually returning to acting. He recently directed ‘Modigliani’ – only his second directorial effort in three decades – and now, it’s been announced that he will play Ebeneezer Scrooge in a new adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol’, directed by horror filmmaker Ti West.
I’m so excited for this movie! It’s going to be a big part of what looks like a really fresh start for Paramount, especially now that they’ve joined forces with Skydance. And it’s not just Johnny Depp starring – Andrea Riseborough is going to be in it too! We’ve got a release date to look forward to now: November 13th, 2026. I’ve already marked my calendar!
This is another adaptation of the beloved Charles Dickens story – there have been many over the years, including one featuring the Muppets! The story follows a grumpy old man who is haunted by the ghost of his former partner and the spirits of Christmases past, present, and future. Nathaniel Halpern wrote the screenplay, and Emma Watts produced it.
Despite Johnny Depp being cast as Ebenezer Scrooge, this marks the second Christmas Carol film announced this year. Warner Bros. is also developing their own version directed by Robert Eggers, starring Willem Dafoe as Scrooge. This upcoming film promises a strikingly different visual style compared to previous adaptations.
