It’s almost time for Marvel’s iconic team, the Fantastic Four, to make their return to the cinema with the movie titled The Fantastic Four: First Steps. This film, set to be the second Marvel Studios release of 2025, finds our heroes squaring off against Galactus, a cosmic entity renowned for consuming planets. The specifics of their battle strategy against him remain unclear, but it’s evident that Reed Richards will need to perform at his best if they hope to emerge victorious.
The marketing campaign for First Steps reveals that Mister Fantastic grapples with guilt over pushing the limits of space and inadvertently inviting a being like Galactus to claim Earth. Though this responsibility is heavy, at least he can find solace knowing he’s not alone in facing challenges, as other iterations of himself have also found themselves in similar predicaments.
Indeed, it’s important to clarify that Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of Mister Fantastic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t the first one introduced. Instead, John Krasinski played a version of the character in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” appearing as part of Earth-838’s Illuminati. Unfortunately, this version doesn’t have a long life due to his conflict with the Scarlet Witch. However, considering time travel is involved, it’s reasonable to assume that Reed Richards from First Steps could interact with his counterpart. Given the anticipation among Marvel fans, artwork depicting these two heroes together has been circulating online.
The picture displays four distinct portrayals of Reed, with two likely recognized by Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) enthusiasts positioned centrally. Yet, the caption beneath the artwork suggests that a collective brainpower of four is superior to two, thus Miles Teller and Ioan Gruffudd are additionally featured. They were key figures in 2015’s “Fantastic Four” and Tim Story’s two “Fantastic Four” films respectively, and though their projects didn’t receive much recognition due to their lack of quality, there’s no question they would be well-received within the MCU.
Could the Council of Reeds Form in the MCU?
In Marvel Comics, The Council of Reeds is a frequently used concept, serving as Mister Fantastic’s go-to solution for problems that seem insurmountable. When he faces challenges beyond his capabilities, he summons these variants of himself to collaborate tirelessly until they find a resolution. However, their methods can sometimes appear questionable. Yet, they are always weighing the greater good against individual needs. This moral dilemma will undoubtedly be present in “First Steps” as the Fantastic Four ponders how to deal with Galactus. Instead of burdening his friends, Reed might instead dial the multiverse hotline.
Although the Council of Kangs played a significant role in Phase 5, it seems unlikely they will reappear, creating a substantial gap in the series. Since Reed is related to the Conqueror, he could take over and maintain a group that safeguards the MCU’s interests. This move would conveniently allow actors like Teller and Gruffudd to join without requiring significant roles for them.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder over the potential consequences of the Council of Reeds disbanding post “First Steps”. The looming presence of Doctor Doom poses a grave threat to our cherished multiverse. Despite Richard Reed’s focus on preserving his own realm, he holds the power to safeguard countless others if he summons a few familiar allies to his side.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters on July 25.
