Jude Law’s Ex Addresses Alleged Incident With Chappell Roan

Catherine Harding is telling her side of the story.

Catherine, mother of Ada Law with ex-partner Jude Law, has spoken up about an incident involving her daughter, Chappell Roan. A security guard is accused of speaking harshly to 11-year-old Ada after she briefly approached the singer’s table.

Catherine explained in a video released on March 22nd that she didn’t anticipate the situation escalating as much as it did. She confirmed that Dave Chappelle stated the security guard wasn’t part of his team and that he wasn’t involved. Catherine clarified the guard wasn’t hotel security, but someone who typically looks after artists, and that he was with Chappelle at the time. She said that’s all the information she has.

She said she hoped Chappell didn’t send the security guard, but pointed out that celebrities have a duty to oversee their employees and ensure they’re acting with permission. She questioned whether the guard would have acted without Chappell’s approval, admitting she wasn’t sure.

Let me tell you, as someone who travels a lot, you never know who you’ll run into! I was having breakfast with my daughter at a hotel recently, and we thought we spotted the singer from the ‘Pink Pony Club’ walking past. My daughter is a huge fan, so naturally she jumped up to get a closer look, just to be sure it was her. It’s those little moments that make traveling so special, isn’t it?

Catherine explained that Ada simply stared at the woman, and wasn’t even certain it was the singer. That was all that happened. They went back to eating breakfast, and then a security guard arrived, speaking in a harsh manner, according to Catherine’s husband.

Honestly, it was so strange. I was just enjoying breakfast in my hotel, completely undisturbed, and I didn’t notice anyone – not even a woman and a child, which is what’s been reported. No one approached me or bothered me at all. It seems like the people involved may have been guests at the same hotel, but I honestly didn’t see them.

She clarified that she hadn’t asked the security guard to approach the mother and child, and they hadn’t approached her either. She emphasized that they weren’t causing any trouble.

Catherine, like her husband Jorginho, reiterated that she doesn’t know if the Grammy-winning artist sent the security guard, but she felt the situation was inappropriate and that the artist was intimidating.

Although Catherine, Ada, and Jorginho couldn’t make it to the concert – which Ada had received as a birthday gift – she expressed hope that a security detail hadn’t been sent in their place. She continued, saying she truly believes the artist is very talented and that they all enjoyed her performance.

Catherine stated this will be the final conversation she and Jorginho have about the issue. She expressed hope that the person involved will learn not to let their employees mistreat others.

After Catherine and Jorginho spoke out, a spokesperson for the singer told TopMob News that Chappell had no knowledge of any contact between the mother and daughter and her security team. The spokesperson also stated that Chappell didn’t see them at breakfast, as she claimed in her video, and didn’t ask anyone on her team to approach them. The singer maintains high standards for her team and doesn’t tolerate any aggressive behavior towards herself or her fans.

Before her representative released a statement, the singer, known for previously facing criticism regarding how she handles interactions with fans and the paparazzi, spoke about the incident on Instagram on March 22nd. She clarified that the security guard involved wasn’t part of her personal team.

The 28-year-old, Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, stated she didn’t see a woman and child, nor did anyone approach her. She was simply having breakfast in her hotel, and believes these individuals were also guests at the same hotel. She emphasized that no one bothered her.

She clarified that she hadn’t asked the security guard to approach the mother and child, and they hadn’t approached her either. She emphasized that they weren’t causing any trouble.

She also spoke out against the security guard’s actions.

She argued that it’s wrong for security to automatically distrust people without a valid reason or any concerning behavior. She also clarified that she has no ill will towards her fans or children, calling the idea that she does “crazy.”

I sincerely apologize to the mother and child if anyone made assumptions about what you would do and caused you any discomfort. It truly saddens me to hear that happened, and you didn’t deserve to be treated that way.

Though it might seem sudden, Chappell Roan has actually been creating music for years, starting in high school when she posted covers and original songs on YouTube. She was signed to Atlantic Records during her senior year, but the excitement didn’t quite match the everyday atmosphere at Willard High.

In a November 2023 interview with Amazon Music, Kayleigh Amstutz shared that the announcement of her signing to Atlantic Records was made over the school’s public address system – followed by the news that pizza would be served for lunch. She said they specifically congratulated her and then announced the pizza.

Your favorite artist’s favorite artist turned to her family when coming up with her alter ego.

The singer, born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz on February 19, 1998, in Willard, Missouri, decided to change her name because she didn’t feel a strong connection to it. She previously mentioned that her grandfather’s musical tastes influenced her decision.

I chose my stage name as a way to honor my grandfather, Dennis K. Chappell. I actually told him I’d be performing as ‘Chappell’ before he sadly passed away from brain cancer in 2016. The ‘Roan’ part comes from his favorite song, an old Western tune called “Strawberry Roan” – it’s about a beautiful pinkish-red horse, and the whole name is really special to me.

Growing up, Chappell attended church multiple times a week, a ritual that made her feel trapped.

She explained to Variety in September 2023 that she struggled with conflicting desires. “I really wanted to be seen as a good person, but I also felt this intense need to break free,” she said. “I would sneak out often, even though I was still going to church three times a week. It was like I was trying to be ‘good,’ but also wanting to rebel and do something completely wild.”

Okay, so she’s not super into organized religion anymore, which is…fine, I guess? But honestly, she said she still appreciates how it shaped who she is, and that just makes me love her even more. It’s like, even though she’s moved on, that part of her story is still important, you know? It’s just… ugh, she’s so thoughtful!

She told Vanity Fair in September 2023 that she’s no longer actively involved with the Christian Church, but she still feels connected to the community and understands their point of view. She explained that her background gives her a unique perspective on complex issues, allowing her to see things others might find baffling.

This midwestern princess was almost a Mid-WED-stern princess.

In a TikTok video from July 2023, she shared that she’d come close to getting married on two occasions, but didn’t offer any further details.

Although we don’t know much about her previous relationships, the singer of “Hot to Go” is known for playfully calling out her exes. Before performing her song “My Kink is Karma” at the 2024 Bonnaroo festival, she publicly sent a pointed message to someone she used to date.

She announced that the song was about her former partner, adding, ‘It’s strange to see you turn into the person you always criticized, while I’ve become the person I always aspired to be.’

And at a later performance she spoke directly to her ex’s new fiancé.

She explained the song was about her ex, who had been telling people at a bar back home that they used to date her. She added it was also a message to her ex’s fiancé, urging them to end the relationship.

Chappell’s first album was initially going to be called Femininomenon, after one of her 2022 songs. However, she changed the title because she thought it was too difficult for people to say. She finally chose The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess to highlight her connection to the American Midwest.

She told Variety that including references to the Midwest was crucial to her project, as it deeply impacts everything she does – her music, style, songwriting, and overall vibe. Capturing that Midwestern essence is important to her, and something she felt she’d lost touch with when she was younger, but now wants to reclaim.

The updated title more accurately reflects the album’s narrative – Chappell’s journey from her hometown in Missouri to chase her musical dreams in Los Angeles.

After being signed to Atlantic Records for five years, Chappell was dropped by the label in 2020.

You know, when I was working on my ‘Pink Pony Club’ project with Dan Nigro, there was some hesitation about releasing it. The team felt like, given the timing with the pandemic, it just wouldn’t resonate with audiences. Plus, it didn’t quite fit the darker, more gothic direction my music was taking at that point. It was a tough call, but we had to consider what would really work.

She explained on Q with Tom Power that her record label dropped her, like many other artists, because of financial difficulties in 2020. With touring – the main source of income for musicians – shut down due to the pandemic, labels were quick to cut ties with artists who weren’t profitable. She added that her song ‘Pink Pony,’ released in April 2020, came out at a particularly bad time for a club track, and the label was hesitant to release it in the first place.

When her record label, Atlantic, ended their contract, Chappell returned to her hometown in Missouri to live with her parents and took a job at a drive-through restaurant. She has said this period made her really rethink her career in music.

As she recalled, “I was just kind of like, ‘I wonder if this is really for me.’”

Despite the challenges, she refused to abandon her passion for music and kept working on her unique style on her own.

Looking back, she told Rolling Stone in 2022 that even though her time with a record label was difficult for five years, it ultimately proved to be a huge benefit. She also learned through being independent that she’s capable of handling things on her own.

Chappell isn’t Dan’s only pop princess.

I remember exactly how I first discovered Olivia Rodrigo – it was through a short Instagram video of her singing “Happier” back in 2020, before anyone really knew her! I was instantly hooked, and it wasn’t long before Dan started working with her. Then came “Driver’s License,” and honestly, that song just launched her into superstardom. It was incredible to witness!

Dan and Olivia were hitting it off, but Chappell was back in Missouri focusing on her music. When Chappell came back to Los Angeles and started working with Dan again, she met Olivia, and the two quickly became very close.

Chappell performed as an opening act for Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour Tour in San Francisco in May 2022, and also opened for the beginning of her GUTS world tour in 2024.

She described her rapid rise to fame as ‘intense and fast,’ explaining that she went from playing a show for 200 people in May of 2022 to performing for 20,000 less than two years later. She was particularly excited because she’d previously opened for the artist in San Francisco in May 2023, playing to a crowd of 9,000. While smaller, that show had a uniquely energetic atmosphere, likely due to the artist’s younger fanbase.

Chappell has not only performed as an opening act for Olivia Rodrigo on two occasions, but she’s also contributed backing vocals to several of Rodrigo’s songs.

During an interview with Capital Buzz about her first album, she shared that she sang backup vocals on several tracks, including “Obsessed,” “Lacy,” “Bad Idea, Right?” and “Can’t Catch Me Now,” which she recorded for the 2023 movie The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

During an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she explained that she and her stylist, Genesis Webb, draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including drag, horror films, burlesque, and theater. She enjoys creating looks that are both beautiful and unsettling, pretty and over-the-top, or even deliberately unconventional – she loves all of it.

No matter what daring outfit she chooses – whether it’s a see-through latex skirt, a fake pig nose, or sparkly butterfly wings – this incredibly stylish woman always manages to make a statement.

The singer remembered the exact moment she understood that Chappell Roan wasn’t simply a name she used on stage—it was also the identity she took on as a drag performer.

I had a drag queen named Crayola open for me during a show in London. She pointed out that I wasn’t just wearing makeup, but truly embodying the art of drag, which was a really impactful moment for me. I’ve since embraced that identity, and it’s been incredibly liberating to think of Chappell Roan as my drag persona. It’s also helped me create a healthy separation between my work and personal life.

While on The Tonight Show, comedian Chappell revealed that RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15 winner, Sasha Colby, inspired the line, “I’m your favorite artist’s favorite artist.”

Oh my gosh, that line was all about Sasha Colby! She has this amazing quote – ‘I’m your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen’ – and it seriously gave me chills. I just immediately thought, ‘I really hope Sasha Colby sees my performance someday,’ and that’s why I had to say it. She’s such an inspiration!

One month after that, the popular drag performer appeared on stage with Chappell while she was performing at the 2024 Capitol Hill Block Party.

After being diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder in 2022, Chappell revealed that her increasing popularity motivated her to get help.

She told Rolling Stone in September 2024 that she had a very unhappy childhood. She described herself as shy, awkward, and lacking in confidence, and said her parents did everything they could to support her.

She finally said, “I understood I couldn’t keep going on like that. I couldn’t live with such intense depression or feeling so hopeless that I considered ending my life. I’ve finally turned things around and gotten my life back on track.”

Since learning about her condition, Chappell has openly shared her experiences with mental health with her fans, hoping to reduce the shame and misunderstanding surrounding it.

She shared on Instagram that this issue impacts her every day and influences her music. She’s currently doing well and wanted to open up about the importance of discussing mental health.

This Midwestern princess won’t be dating another singer anytime in the future.

In a September 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, the singer of “School Nights” plainly stated she doesn’t want to date other musicians, saying they are “crazy.”

In March 2025, Chappell shared that she’d been dating someone for six months and was really enjoying the relationship.

“It’s serious,” she said on the Call Her Daddypodcast. “I’m very in love.”

She added, “I’m dating the same person that I was dating before [my career] blew up.”

Chappell publicly announced she is a lesbian during a performance in Ohio in early 2024, after previously dating men.

She told Rolling Stone that her beliefs meant she shouldn’t have been involved with men. Now, she finds the idea of kissing a man unappealing, feeling that no man could compare to women as partners.

Despite her progress, she admitted she still occasionally struggles with her sexuality. “I don’t understand why it bothers me sometimes,” she explained. “It shouldn’t, but I’m realizing I need to come to terms with it.”

Even though she still sometimes feels uneasy, Chappell is comfortable with who she is as a queer person, but she doesn’t want to constantly discuss it.

Chappell revealed during her June performance at the 2024 Governor’s Ball that she had declined an invitation from President Joe Biden to perform at the White House for Pride Month.

She explained her decision by saying she wanted everyone to have liberty, justice, and freedom. She added that she would join once those things were achieved.

During the performance, she also demanded equal rights for marginalized communities.

Dressed as the Statue of Liberty, she powerfully stated she represented the ultimate queen. She reminded everyone of the iconic poem inscribed on the Statue – ‘Give me your tired, your poor…’ – and explained it meant fighting for the rights of transgender people, women, and all those facing oppression, especially in occupied territories. She emphasized the importance of freedom for everyone.

Before performing at the 2024 VMAs, where she channeled Joan of Arc, Chappell had a heated exchange with a photographer on the red carpet. After the photographer reportedly told someone to “Shut the fk up,” Chappell angrily retorted, telling him, “YOU shut the fk up. Don’t! Not me, bh.”

Her reasoning for standing up for herself is quite simple.

She expressed her dislike of the attention surrounding the situation in a statement to Newsweek. While some participants are accustomed to the public spotlight, she isn’t. She made it clear she won’t tolerate being dismissed or disrespected, even by someone famous.

Chappell demonstrated her excellent memory when she approached a photographer at the premiere of Netflix’s Olivia Rodrigo: GUTS World Tour to address a past unpleasant experience with them.

She confronted a photographer, saying, “You were really disrespectful to me at the Grammys and yelled at me at the after-party. I haven’t forgotten, and I think I deserve an apology for how rude you were. I need you to apologize.”

The Grammy-winning artist, famous for her catchy pop hits, is trying something new with her country song, “The Giver.”

Chappell explained on Apple Music’s Today’s Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen in March 2025 that he wrote a country song simply because he thought it would be amusing. He described the song as ‘campy and fun.’

The song was fun to create, but Chappell also said it represents a return to the kind of music she originally made.

She explained that she was raised in southwest Missouri, listening to Christian and country music. Then, she discovered Lady Gaga’s song ‘Alejandro,’ which opened her up to new sounds, but she still holds a special place in her heart for country music.

The singer behind “Red Wine Supernova,” known for being honest about the challenges of fame, believes she would be even more popular if she didn’t share her opinions so openly.

In January 2025, Chappell told the BBC that he believes he’d achieve greater success if he could suppress his natural reactions. He explained that if he ignored his instincts – the internal voice telling him to stop and protect himself – he could reach a wider audience and become more prominent.
